Cable Modem - for Wi-Fi

Hi guys, where can I get a cheap wifi router for cable broadband at home. Not sure where to get the cheapest but decent one.

The ones posted up on here seem to be broadband modem/routers only.

Sorry if I don't make sense I don't know much about these.

Please help. Thanks

  • Do a search for "cable modem wireless router". Your cable provider (Telstra or Optus) may also have recommendations, but might cost more than buying it yourself. Finally if the provider has already installed a cable modem, you might want to buy just a wireless router to connect to that.

The other technology you have in mind is ADSL and most modem/router combos are a "ADSL modem wireless router".

  • These should be pretty cheap at officeworks if you don't need gigabit on it.

  • Thank you for that. Our cable provider has already installed a cable modem with wireless access but it's crap. If your in the other room the speed drops dramatically. Therefore need to buy one that would pick up around the home.

I might check out and ask the gurus at officeworks to start off.

Thanks again. Please let me know if there are any online deals for one of these in the mean time

    • If your cable modem has an Ethernet port and can be put into bridge mode, you might prefer to get just a wireless router for wider selection. Downside is two pieces of equipment, two power packs, more cables, etc.

  • Try Apple Airport Express.
    2nd generation rocks.
It's AUD119 in JB and DSE, but it worth it!
    (AUD99 - 1st generation that sucks)
Apple router doesn't mean that it serves only Apple devices ;)

Otherwise after year(s) of struggling against cheap router, you'll come to buy something better anyway.

  • I've got a Netgear WNR2000 router suitable for a cable modem, used it for about 6 months, but it's just sitting here doing nothing now as I've got a modem with router now. I'll sell it to you for $35, it's still got the box and everything with it.

  • Done il take it. Can you deliver to syd?

  • I'll think about it, I'd need the money paid up front into my bank account and you pay for the postage, which shouldn't be too much, I'm in Brisbane, Let me know if you're still interested, and I'll let you know if I'm willing to post it.

  • When your ready to sell it give me a final figure which includes the postage. Il continue shopping for now

  • Hi, I've checked the postage it's $12 to Sydney so $47 all up, it's like new the power supply and the cable are still packaged, I never used them and then I got this Modem with router from Telstra. Anyway it's up to you, let me know if you still want it and I'll send you my bank details and you send me your address.
    Thanks Theo.

  • The TP-LINK WR1043ND is recommended on WP and it has decent wifi range as well.
Currently using one with my Netgear CG3100 cable modem in Bridge mode.
Can be had for ~$60 new
