Ok to Top up Mazda CX-5 with 15w-40?

Hey all, Heading off on a roadtrip in the morning and just noticed that the oil is under half.

Usually we get the car serviced with 5w-30 full synthetic. I don't have any past me however I do have plenty of 15w-40 semi synth in the garage.

Should this be ok for a one off top up or should I just go out and buy the 5w-30 they recommend?

Cheers

  • Heading off on a roadtrip in the morning and just noticed that the oil is under half.

Under means …. under half? , or under half between min-max of dipstick marker ?

If it's the latter and you're tight, it's ok to top up the bit with what you've got then get an oil change when you're back from roadtrip.

It's still very much ok to drive around with under half between min-max of dipstick marker.

  • It's around the middle of the two markers, which in this model are just holes.

Don't need to top up. That's still perfectly normal level to drive on.

      • Ok thanks for that.

        • But keep an eye on it. If it drops further could mean something wrong

      • If it's not high KMs I'd be concerned with that level of consumption.

We don't even know what was the level before, or whether it consumes oil, or leaking seals.

Some service workshop fill it to the middle of min.-max. which is still reasonable as it doesn't have to be at MAX.

Whilst cheapskate mechanic could be filling it just enough right at the min. level.

We also got muppets that overfilled to the brim, way above the max. till the top end whipping the oil like slushy full of bubbles where disaster happens.

Along with that train of thought, it’s also bad to have too much oil in the car. If it’s between the min/max I’d leave it.

Plus, did you check the oil at the right time according to the manual of the vehicle?

        • Yes I have an eye on it. Never used to move between services. If it's a leak though it's a very slow one

  • It's fine to top it up once, better than no oil. But if you need to top up regularly buy the right oil next time.

Better than topping it with WD40.

The difference on most dipsticks between low and high are only a couple hundred ml. I wouldnt top up with that oil if you're above the low.
It could also not be a leak but burning oil e.g. getting past piston rings or similar.

    • The difference between bottom and top marks is 1L

      • On cx5? That's a lot!

        • On 99% of passenger vehicles, it's 1L

  • Just to make sure did you check on a level surface if you did it should be fine at 1/2 way but check while away to make sure it isn't getting lower if it wasn't on a level surface check on one, also note garages and servos aren't necessarily level so don't assume they are
