Melbourne Based Surgeon for Sebaceous Cyst Removal

Happy Sunday all,

hoping to get some suggestions from anyone that may have used a surgeon to removal skin growths, in particular sebaceous cyst.

CBD preferred but location flexible as long as in Melbourne.

Pretty much I've been on the public waiting list for 1.5yrs and all the while its doubled in size and driving me bonkers. I was previously given a referral to a surgeon but they repeatedly never answered my call or called me back and given that the referral wasn't due to the GP having experience with them etc, just a bit of a random pick really, I don't really have much confidence.

I do have private health insurance with AHM but I just don't know where to start to get this done. The hospital has also not been able to provide any suggestions or even more detail on the type of surgeon (cosmetic/dermatology etc) I should be looking forward so any personal experience with this or similar would be much appreciated.

Thanks all.

Edit: Melbourne inner suburbs and cbd specific suggestions would be great, if anyone has.

  • I had one done at the local skin clinic a few years back if that helps?
I'm in QLD but I suspect skin clinics everywhere would do them?

Unless it’s on your face or other very obvious place a general surgeon would be fine. A plastic surgeon if you’re worried about aesthetics. Some dermatologists or even GPs with skin clinics might even do it depending on the size and location. AHM should be able to give you a list of preferred providers if you go with a surgeon. It would just be a day procedure if using insurance, but you may not even need to go to hospital, some people might just do it as an outpatient procedure in which case you wouldn’t be able to use health insurance, but also wouldn’t have to pay excess to health insurance provider.

    • It's on my spine. I don't really know the options of how'd look general vs plastic surgery so not really sure what's better for my circumstances. Great idea re preferred surgeon type providers. Going to follow that advice tomorrow thankyou.

Referrals don't need to be used with a specific person, I'd take the referral and hunt around a couple of skin specialist places.

    • Great to know, thankyou. I'll narrow down an ahm list tomorrow and then go from there. Appreciated.

  • I just talked my local GP into doing mine.

    • Yeah that was what I thought was going to happen almost 2 years ago. Then when they go the ultrasound results they decided to back away.

  • I had one removed from the back of my head by my GP a few years ago.

  • Just don't go 'cosmetic' surgeon - they don't have qualifications like a plastic surgeon does.

  • Surely your GP would be able to refer you to a dermatologist?

    • Well "would be able to", is an interesting word here. It relies on the other person doing something that thus far they haven't.
I believe it may be due to the size and delicate location around my spine.

I had one on my lower back and it was painful. I went to emergency and was in for surgery later that day and home that evening. Did have to spend months getting the wound packed and dressed daily until it healed properly.

Yeah similar story here for a different kind of cyst a few years ago. That one was super painful and ended up in emergency and daily gauze etc like you. I believe this one is different and because it doesn't hurt they won't push me up the list. I don't feel right pretending to be in pain and have a potential infection, just to attempt to skip ahead, but I won't say I'm not tempted. Bigger it gets the more difficult the healing and I tend to develop keloid scars in most cases.

Hope you can get this one sorted out as soon as possible.

        • Thanks, so do I.

  • Hi @cookie2 - sorry to drag up an old thread, but did you get any suggestions? I'm looking for the same thing
