Cruise Ship Internet

Anyone have a good hack for cruise ship internet? P&O have a 3-tiered internet/mobile system.
I think it's:
$8/day for basic calls
$12/day for internet/calls but no video streams
$15/day for video streaming etc.

Anyone tried paying for a single device and then hotspotting to other devices or another system that worked for them?
I don't really want to pay $15/day for multiple devices.

Cheers.

Also I think an Android phone can connect to Wifi and also be set up a hot spot at the same time? But it should be easy to test this before you go.

Or if there's mains power in the cabin/room then buy an old used router which is supported by Open-WRT. Then connect one of the radios to the Cruise wifi and voila. However it will be more bulky and you may need to bring a laptop with ethernet cable, but I think it could be set up with just a phone if you enable the radios before you leave.

    • I tend to purchase onboard telecom services due to work requirements. One issue I have with onboard wifi or phone services is that when you reach port or are within a few km of shore, you have to step onto shore before you can use the in-country telecom services for phone calls and phone data. Is there a way I can disable the ship's wifi /phone services on my phone so I can use the land based in-country telecom services?

If you've got reception of the land based network, isn't it as simple as turning off wifi or selecting a different connection?

Some phones have trouple receiving and then hotspotting a WIFI signal, Samsung galaxy's can via a feature called Wifi sharing - I am unsure about iPhones.

If you have a win 10/11 laptop it has a built-in feature called Mobile Hotspot that will do it.

I guess you could share but note you all have to stay clustered around the router's wifi.

    • I ended up paying for 2 x accesses. I also bought a mango to see how that works with sharing to other devices, and to play around with

Your on a cruise, enjoy it… leave ya internet shizzle till ya get to port/home…

    • How am I to check for more Ozbargain deals without the interweb?

  • So the OP can afford the considerable expense of a cruise, but wants to get away with cheating the cruise company out of the few bucks extra for internet access?

The answer on how to do it is the same as for sharing the internet provided by any place you are getting accomodation at. A travel router. Its just a matter of whether what it costs is worth what you save, which depends on how long you'll need to use it.

      Remember this is Ozbargain!
Ended up buying 2 x connections and a Mango for good measure.

Also, the cruise company has gotten plenty of extra coin out of me for this trip already. Drinks, Water park, Adventure Park, Shore Trips. Hahaha

When I went 4 years ago to the pacific islands they only had one tier and it was quite spotty.

If they've improved since then you can pick up this handy box which can act as a repeater for you.
It'll obviously only work when you're within range of it though - so think about how often you'll all want to be browsing stuff when not in your room.

    • Bought one. Thanks mate. Hope it works

  • I did this with my laptop. Windows can hotspot your connection.
