Liquor Land 20% off Whisky Father's Day Special a scam. ACCC should look into it

I went to my local Liquor Land, all excited and hoping to bag a bargain on scotch whisky. To my not so surprised shock, the prices seem to have gone up, a bottle of 700ml Black Douglas or it may have been Grants, was $40.00!. One look at (http://danmurphys.com.au/spirits-mixers/scotch-whisky), will show you that these are usually around the $35.00 at maximum. $28.90 for Grants, I believe is a bargain in itself. I am sure the last time I perused through the Scotch at Liquor land the prices were a lot lower, SHAME on you Liquor Land and Coles, SHAME ON YOU!.
By the way you also have to buy2 bottles to get the 20% off.

  • Grants 700ml for $40 is ridiculous, but prices have gone up recently across the company, including 1st choice. Canadian Club went up $2 a bottle at 1C to $36, $37 at LL, which with the 30% off, brings it down to $30.40, so that's ok. But for those 2 examples you gave, I agree.

    • I believe it's only 20%off not 30%.

      • I made a mistake, it's $38 at LL, not $37. Then $38 * 0.8 = $30.40.
And the 30% was a typo, sorry.

        • Hey… why did I get negged for clarifying 20% not 30% ???… strange world.

        • +1

I didn't mean to, sorry man, my bad.

        • Cheers! Thanks for your co-operation.

  • It clearly says in the catalogue you have to buy 2, to receive 20%. The letters are that large I'm not sure how you missed it.

"a bottle of 700ml Black Douglas or it may have been Grants" Do you not know the difference? It usually says the brand on the label, and you do realize they make more expensive whisky's as well….

    • ch4rgd, who are you addressing?, I for one did not miss it!, I only clarified the 20% not 30% to notout50, and added as a 'by the way' you also 'have to' buy 2 bottles to get the discount.
"a bottle of 700ml Black Douglas or it may have been Grants" Do you not know the difference?, same difference, same point.
My link to Dan Murphy's should at least inform you that I most likely know there are such things as 'brands', 'grades', and EVEN different types of whiskies…
      Chill out dude!

You both need a drink…go get some whisky. I know a place you can go for 20% off (but you need to buy two). :)

By the way, have you tried boozle.com.au? This should give you the cheapest booze closest to you.

        Cheers!

Given the trend of the Aussie dollar the last few years, most spirits should be alot cheaper!

    • +2

Yes but unfortunately our high tax on alcohol means that will not happen :(

  • If you want the ACCC to look into it, you had better let them know. I dont think they read forums at Ozbargain.

Hmmmm, so….. having gone to a particular store, the prices seemed to have gone up on some brands…. (we're not completely sure which ones, nor are we completely sure what the prices were before)..

Checking a completely unrelated store showed they had lower prices… (message in there somewhere perhaps?)

From memory…. some time ago, (not sure when), some whiskeys, (again, not sure which), may have been cheaper, (not sure by how much, if they were on special, etc etc)

The ACCC will be thrilled to see you…..

      Cheers mate!.

      you missed this little gem
"I am sure the last time I perused through the Scotch at Liquor land the prices were a lot lower".

What about this other from notout50
"Grants 700ml for $40 is ridiculous, but prices have gone up recently across the company, including 1st choice. Canadian Club went up $2 a bottle at 1C to $36, $37 at LL, which with the 30% off, brings it down to $30.40, so that's ok. But for those 2 examples you gave, I agree."

Be happy trolling… constructive participation would be better!

      Clink, clink!

        constructive participation would be better!

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is the ACCC will do nothing….. Your account is incredibly vague. The retailer is entitled to sell their whisky at whatever price they wish… It's up to you if you wish to buy it or not.

More constructive participation…. (perhaps I was a bit too cryptic previously)….
You found the whisky cheaper at another store…… You should maybe buy it from the cheaper store….

Yes, I never stated, that my post would be the basis of my argument, if I decided to lodge a formal complaint with the ACCC.

You know your post was ridiculing my 'arguments/points'.

Stores may be allowed to sell product at whatever price they wish, they are not allowed however to 'mislead' the public by inflating the price then advertising a discount which then makes the 'offer' misleading. Hence why I posted the danmurphy's link, There is now ay LL would have their 'old' prices still on the website, as a matter of fact, I believe they don't even advertise their prices online!.

As you can read, other people agreed, because they also know the prices have been increased…

        • Yes, I never stated, that my post would be the basis of my argument, if I decided to lodge a formal complaint with the ACCC.

What exactly would your argument be?

You are unsure of what bottle of whisky was $40, then assume that Dan Murphys is some sort of official benchmark for pricing, (incidentally, there are 5 types of 'Grants' whisky at Dan Murphys…. 4 of them are $40 or over……)

The 'standard' 700ml Grants is $37 at liquorland online….. If we assume similar pricing in store, that will take the whisky to $60 for two….. or $30 each.
'Standard' Grants at Dan murphys is 34…
Even if the grants was $40 each… with 20% off it's still cheaper than Dan Murphys.
          same applies for black douglas…..

          Lets keep having fun then.
"You are unsure of what bottle of whisky was $40, then assume that Dan Murphys is some sort of official benchmark for pricing, (incidentally, there are 5 types of 'Grants' whisky at Dan Murphys…. 4 of them are $40 or over……)"

YOU are assuming, that I assumed DanMurphys to be 'some sort of official benchmark'. I never stated this, I only used them as an example, I could've used/referred to 1st choice Liquor as motout50 did… whatever!.

What exactly would your argument be?

I have absolutely no interest in explaining to YOU what my argument would be.

Again, as your previous post, all you do is 'pick on' elements where you believe you find holes/faults, but yet do not see the faults in YOUR posts/replies!

Anyway, thanks for your participation on my post, pity you did not get the point.

Here at ozbargain, we expect bargains, such as 20%off already low prices.

When you then compare the $29.60 not $30.00 as you stated (80% of $37.00) at LL, to the $28.90 for the same standard bottle of Grants at DMs as their 'standard/everyday' price… which is cheaper? You are stating LL!…
          W?T?F?!

        • $28.90 for the same standard bottle of Grants at DMs

          http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_43457/grant-s-scotch-whi…
$34, (or 33.99, to be precise), at least that's the case in SA.

which is more than $30… (or indeed $29.60)

Here at ozbargain, we expect bargains

What does that have to do with anything?….. This was never posted as being a bargain…..
Besides…. When I was a lad, a bargain was something that was cheaper than elsewhere…. not more expensive……

pity you did not get the point.

I don't….I am struggling to understand the "SCAM" and "ACCC should look into it" allegations….. Why should we be beating down the door of the ACCC?… shops charge different amounts for the same stuff…… It's not a new phenomenon…

SHAME on you Liquor Land and Coles, SHAME ON YOU!.

Whaaaaat??……. Just buy the stuff from Dan Murphys…… it's cheaper (or not)

        • -2

-Who is talking about beating down who's door, I did not ask a collective =we, to be beating down their door?, you've just gone off on your own little tangent.
-You do realise you are at the ozbargain forums.
-You did state 'When I was a lad, a bargain was something that was cheaper than elsewhere…. not more expensive……", therefore you agree that by YOUR definition LL is saying they have a 20% bargain, but overall it isn't.
          - a SCAM can be when s'thing is sold as s'thing it isn't, in this case a VERY GOOD price, someone can SCAM you out of a $1.00, the amount is NOT THE POINT.
-The ACCC look at many things, not just the 'biggies'.
-"Whaaaaat??……. Just buy the stuff from Dan Murphys…… it's cheaper (or not)… "I did, THAT's NOT THE POINT!.

I get it now though," at least that's the case in SA.", you said it all there.

Since you are stating you are not a lad anymore, calm down gets bottle of whisky from LL at 20%off, and don't give your self a heart attack.
I dod ou a favour and give yoga good link, ONE better than the three you posted, I'm sure you'll find it helpful… you don't have to thank me. Good Bye.. and Clink Cllink.
