Good Physical Shoes for an Overweight Guy?

Hi all, wondering if there is any well priced shoes for an overweight guy (size 10s).
I'm attempting to do basic outdoor martial arts as a way to get out more (no I'm not good at it lol) and I just find the shoes are really hurting my feet trying to dodge with that much weight (I do understand that a lot of that is to just do with me being unfit/overweight lol).

Anyone have any good recommendations? I like to keep at $100 level, but if it lasts a good amount of time, I'd drop $220 on some.

  • Good Physical Shoes..

Have they have virtual shoes now?

    ….for an Overweight Guy?

Running shoes? (alright everyone.. nothing to see - just fat guy making fun of fellow fat guy here!😁)

    • +1

hahaha funnily enough I actually added "martial arts" and "dodge" and "Physical" specifically because I don't think I've ever run anywhere in my life, so didn't want to say running shoes XD

  • i think the issues are:
    - Fit of the shoes - have you tried Wide or Extra Wide shoes before?
    - The type of movements you're doing - runners are designed to tilt forward and provide grip in a forward motion - whereas martial arts is more about being mobile in all directions - they might be a different style of footwear that is better suited to the activity. (For example, indoor volleyball shoes is an absolute must for indoor volleyball)

    • Thanks so much for this, for some reason i always thought I needed runners, but you're right, something like volleyball or similar is way more similar to what I'd do.
Cheers regarding the fit as well, I think I always buy a size up, but I should really try a wide fit instead to see if it makes a difference. Cheers.

  • Anyone have any good recommendations?

New Balance have a wide fit version in most shoes and the $150-250 range for shoes are really great for walking in etc. Not sure how they go for martial arts.

    • Thanks for this, I have a feeling I got a New Balance a while back and really really really liked them. Accidently ruined them due to stepping in some mud and stuff, but could really go back.

  • You do not want running shoes. They are unstable other than in a forward motion - terrible for side to side, especially with the current trend toward thick soles.

You want something like tennis shoes or cross fit shoes (eg reebok nano). Tennis shoes might be a good starting point, match them to the surface you are on (eg grass or whatever)

There are also martial arts shoes although they are generally designed for inside. Adidas have wide fit martial arts shoes for around $100

    • Thanks mate! you're right! For some reason I thought I always wanted running shoes, but its more tennis/cross fit type ones. Hmm the Reebok Nano x2 seems to be on sale too https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/783359 . Cheers mate.

  • Stop being….

    • lol thats the point of the shoes, to do physical exercise outside so that I can….

      • 80/20 rule. 80% diet, 20% exercise

  • See a podiatrist first and have them recommend you a pair of shoes.

    • Preferably one who offers a podiatric biomechanical assessment

  • Honestly get some work boots.

If you can kick in those you can kick in anything.

Plus you can do other work in them honestly if you don't have any it's pretty beneficial to own a pair.

I think I picked my last one up from target or kmart.

Don't even need to get the steel toed ones just any work boot.

Extra bonus: good for hiking and any rough terrain or wet weather.

Only place you really can't take them is in rsl clubs or the beach or swimming pool.. Well actually you can but it might feel weird.
