Watching TVNZ+ in Australia for The Ashes - Any VPNs?

Hi forum,

I've been thoroughly enjoying watching the Ashes on Spark Sport NZ, which gets its footage directly from Sky UK - so, no 9Now, no ads, and no stupid Channel 9 studio.

It's free. Just need a free account and an NZ VPN. I've been using Surfshark for the first one and a half tests on Spark with no problem.

Unfortunately, Spark Sport NZ is shutting down… today. I guess streaming platforms come and go.

TVNZ+ will take over from Spark from tomorrow. Seems to be free and with a free account, but so far I haven't been able to connect using Surfshark.

I'm wondering if any kind fellow cricket-loving, Channel 9-hating, VPN-using folks here on OzBargain can try and access TVNZ+ streaming on a different VPN like Nord (which I used to have) or others. I'm willing to get another VPN rather than put up with Ch 9.

Alternatively I'll look into Sky UK itself, but haven't got that far yet.

Any other suggestions are welcome too. :)

Thank!

I tried Nord, but can't seem to get it to work.

When I try and play, I get this error (I tried on both Chrome and Edge)

This video is either unavailable or not supported in this browser
    Error Code: MEDIA_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED
    Technical details :
The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.

    • Thanks for trying! That's the same error I get on Surfshark. Tried Mozilla as well as several Chromium browsers myself.

  • ControlD controld.com It's usually $40/year. But if you buy https://stacksocial.com/sales/control-d-5-year-subscriptions you can upgrade it to full controld for an ongoing $10/year instead of paying $40/year.

  • I use surfshark and have no issues accessing tvnz on my nvidia shield.

    • Does that include playing a stream?

I've just tried ControlD and can play the latest Star Trek but not live tv, which is unusual. I also can't play live using Surfshark and Chrome, neither with Getflix and Chrome. I think it's an issue at their end.

I use DNS4Me for accessing TVNZ+, Three Now, and Sky Sports (as a paying customer). Watching nearly ad free Ashes as I speak. The only ad breaks are those that Fox Cricket usually have (pre show, drinks break, lunch, tea). They do have self promos between some overs (usually every 15 minutes or so).

If you are using the official TVNZ+ app, your mobile must be in the NZ timezone to work. Thankfully Matt Huisman's Kodi plugin makes this a non-issue for most https://www.matthuisman.nz/2017/02/kodi-tvnz-ondemand-add-on…

    • Sadly I seem to lack the expertise to get either of these working. dns4me is all Greek to me. Kodi I did install on my desktop along with the various plugins per Matt Huisman, but after getting to the TVNZ+ plugin, playback fails, and the log doesn't reveal much to me.
