Are You Leaving Reddit Because of The Paid API Shenanigans?

As a long-term Apollo user, I'm pretty gutted by the API changes and plan to leave Reddit for good today.

I'm curious to know what other OzBargainers think.

So…. are you leaving Reddit?

      the whole cesspool

Might say something about the subreddits you've been visiting.

        r/HermanCainAward for example?

        • +3

r/HermanCainAward, just the latest take on the Darwin Awards, which have been around so long they even had hard copy publication, released over 20 years ago. https://www.thriftbooks.com/series/darwin-awards/42525/

Or perhaps you are offended by the posts about anti-vaxxers, whose anti-vax posts on FB, are posted there, and after, their subsequent decline/demise due to covid.

      • Tumblr went from a forum of good behaviour to dropping undies. Once they made a cleanup, die hard folks left.
Reddit went from clearwater to a cesspool, any attempt to clean is a knive edge between keeping morals or users. So background tricks have to make pay for its running costs.
Tik Tok has swamped the world, supposed to be clean but the devils keep bending the rules. Global forums try hard to make it compatible to regional laws. VPN users bypass it, same with Netflix, if they can make all users pay their share prices jump, if hackers defeat a blocking attempt the shares drop.
Youtube brought in "shorts" to compete with Tik Tok. Youtube teachers call themselves SHAMELESS!! So what rule applies where?
Twitter turned the short traders into a cesspool. Migrant sunnyboy Musk was the fool to be shorted. So if you can't beat it, just buy it!

Visits cesspool subreddits, complains about cesspool. Or visits normal subreddits, posts useless or unwanted content, complains about moderation.

Make your own cesspool subreddit and be king of that cesspool that aligns with your hopes and dreams.

For someone who hates the Reddit cesspool you're somewhat an expert in Reddit , and you even posted about being offered a mod position on a subreddit. Talk about arguing with yourself in the mirror.

triggered once more …..so predictable youd be here replying and defending that shithole yet again and again showing your fixated tendencies.
….there is a life outsife of dominating ozbargain forums with your opinion ya know….

          How is SBOB defending reddit?

They just made the correct statement that the face of reddit for any user is the subreddits they subscribe to. If you feel it's a cesspool, perhaps reconsider the subreddits you're subscribed to.

rather enjoying watching the whole cesspool implode in on itself as it rolls towards ipo

Whilst I agree with the sentiment with respect to the admin/management of the platform, this completely disregards the loss for the communities. Reddit is a wealth of human interaction and knowledge, if you look in the right places. That will be the true loss.

No, I am leaving because they banned me AGAIN.

Ozbargain locks me out for the words boat and motor!!!

      • +1

Only when you combine them as a verb.

      • +1

The correct term is powerboat :D

*(considered providing an example here of the term powerboat involving OP's partner, but felt that was perhaps crossing a line. Added this statement so at least the humorous side of said example could be enjoyed :) )*

I can't use my main app for it any more, so yep, will leave.

Official app is garbage. I won't use an app if it is riddled with ads and annoys me.

  • +3

I've only ever used it on desktop, so the API changes don't affect my specific access method.
However I do expect the content to diminish with the amount of people leaving, so I guess time will tell.

    • +4

Everyone will forget about this in 3 months.

I think you'll find that niche subreddits will continue to be fine. But you may need to look elsewhere for doom scrolling on /r/pics

      • I am pretty fed up of looking at John (profanity) Oliver.

  • +11

I don't use any reddit apps so not directly impacted, but the number of subs imploding over this or threatening to shut and move elsewhere is disconcerting.

I am however far more annoyed that Twitter is now forcing you to login to see tweets or accounts which is completely contrary to the site's original (and Eloon's claimed) open public square ethos. Coupled with Youtube starting to disable videos for anyone using adblockers and it has been a pretty shitty week for anti-consumer behavior.

    • +2

Users aren't consumers.. they're suppliers. The party paying money is the consumer

The consumers are ad buyers and purchasers of the data. If the suppliers/users aren't supplying data or ad-views, not surprising they get cut off.

      • +2

We can both be correct here - users absolutely are consumers of these services, and that consumption generates a new product that the service provider can in turn sell (impressions/ad views, user data). If the roughly 500M+ people who use twitter without a registered account can no longer do that, all you've done is limit your supply of user data and engagement with the platform to whatever % is willing to sign up.

I can't see ad buyers supporting this decision at all, and if it's detrimental enough the producers/influencers/broadcasters tweeting will look to move to more stable platforms. But Eloon doesn't want anyone bypassing his new paid API and he's damn well gonna cut his own nose off to spite his face over it!

I know it isn't optimal, but I've been on the official Reddit app since day one. Haven't been bothered to change or look for alternatives, the only gripe I have are the constant UI changes, of which some actually improve the app whilst others turn it into a buggy mess (looking at whoever stuffed around with the mobile video player over the recent months)

  • +2

Pretty much all but 1 subreddit I have joined are back to "normal". I don't use app, reddit mobile web is usable for me so I don't think I am really affected.

At the end people will just congregate at places where other like-minded are, and if this event makes Internet communities more decentralised — it might be a good outcome. However from what I have seen so far, it's either communities going into Discord/Telegram (not really a forum platform with long tail content), or multiple smaller forums / instances of Lemmy discussing the same topics. Nothing at the same scale of usefulness as reddit, yet…

I have yet to find a better place to shitpost as r/anarchychess and r/vexilollogycirckjerk.

OzBargain simply doesn't have the culture for it

  • +7

I don't know about you lads but I'm optimistic about this. Between Reddit degenerating itself into a mass exodus, and Elon locking down Twitter 'temporarily' so people without accounts can't see anything, I'm expecting to be touching more grass than ever.

tried to move away in 2015 or 16 to voat, but still waiting for registration to go through. probably just stop using reddit as was accessing through reddit is fun app.

  • Is there an alternative remotely comparable to Reddit?

  • +3

Begrudgingly yes - too used to googling a problem/query I have , and then adding ‘reddit’ to end of it

    Black mirror s6 discussion reddit
    Satisfactory highest efficiency build reddit
Rode Go II vs DJI mic reddit
    Reasons to live reddit
    Etc

  • +2

I'm still looking for an alternative. Tried Lemmy, not enough people there. My main reason for moving out is that it's becoming too popular, the subs that had good information in the past are now filled with people's opinions. The API changes is the second reason. Used to use reveddit which needed the API to work. One thing I liked about reddit over ozbargain & other similar places is that they would remind you if someone replied to your post.

  • No but they perma banned me (I deserved it) and they shadowban any new account I make so I don't know how to get back on it..

  • +1

I'm using the official Reddit app, what do the others give you over that?

    • +2

I used Apollo and the first huge advantage was no ads at all. But there was easier navigation, direct download of videos from within the app, lots of customization features, filtering keywords so if your sick of hearing about something eg OceanGate it will filter out every post about it so you never have to see them. Saving posts to different categories, lots of accessibility features for blind/colourblind people and lots of features to help moderators do their job easily from their phone which is why the mods are so upset

      • filtering keywords so if your sick of hearing about something eg OceanGate it will filter out every post about it so you never have to see them.

Now this I wish was a feature of the official Reddit app, would have found this pretty handy

and lots of features to help moderators do their job easily from their phone which is why the mods are so upset

I would say most of the crucial mod tools work fine on the official Reddit app; no, it's not perfect and no where near as extensive as the mod tools available on desktop but it gets the job done most of the time
