First Time Parents - 2023 Buying Guides

Hi everyone, my fiance is due in September and we're starting up the shopping for everything.

Was wondering if someone might have a PDF copy to the Pram and Baby Monitor Choice buying guide for 2023 available?

I have heard that I can go to the local library and might be able to read them there.

Happy to hear about any other resources I could watch.

We've bought the nursing chair, change table, baby carseat and cot so far.

Those clicky-in carseat/child carrier. So much easier to buckle them in while your in the house.

    • Agree, a capsule is very handy especially if you get some adaptors so it can be used with your pram too.

Just be aware some capsules can take a lot of space in the car so make sure your front seat passenger will have enough space once installed.

I also recommend the Babyzen Yoyo pram. Can fit behind the passenger seat folded (and can be used as carry on when flying) which keeps your boot free as some prams are very bulky. Lightweight and easy to fold / unfold.

  • I suggest buying a single pram in the first instance and then upgrading it to a double when you have a second baby.
We didn't worry about a baby monitor as we co-sleep and our daughter naps in the living room. Perhaps think about this before purchasing one.
A fabric bedside bassinet with breathable panels is a great investment (i.e. Star Kidz Vicino).
There's a huge second-hand market for sleeping bags, I'd suggest buying second hand, soaking with napisan and hanging out in the sun to sanitise.
Perhaps controversial and not really answering your question but we followed the Possums Approach to sleep and it worked wonders for us. Our daughter can sleep anywhere and has all her daytime naps in natural light. We were able to take her to the US, Europe and Korea in her first year and I credit the Possums Approach for allowing us to happily travel with our daughter due to no scheduled nap times and the ability for her to sleep anywhere when she's tired.

  • Aim for something with wheels and a spot for baby..

  • 1st time parents always do this kind of "i must have the safest best reviewed blah blah"

You will learn (and congrats!) that this is a total waste of your money.

I cant really help you but here is a tip to source things for your next child once you realise the 10k you have wasted on new things you only use for a few months then stick in the bin (sort of) was a pointless spend

IMO, don’t get a baby monitor. When it comes to first time parenting, You’ll be watching like a hawk whenever they sleep and be in there too quickly. You want them to be able to self settle

Hmm because I'm using a baby monitor, I don't need to run in there to check.

    • We have always had baby monitors - it allows you to keep an eye on the baby while you let them self settle. Especially if you let them sleep in their own room, or have multiple floors in the house. If they wake and murmur I give them some time to see if they settle again before going to get them. It feels safer being able to see and hear them clearly whilst not necessarily going to them straight away.

If you want something audio only and cheap, the IKEA one is pretty good. We take it if travelling. For something with camera as well, we had a Vtech one at first but it was buggy and for the same price it was lesser functionality, and then it died. We replaced it with a HelloBaby one we got on Amazon which has been sufficient. No fancy AI (like rollover detection which sounds annoying if you have a stomach sleeper) like Cubo or others, but it's got good sound and clear enough night vision.

  • Our one slept in our bed, it was a good idea for the baby to have a separate room/bed but when you're waking up every 2 hours to make a bottle/pump and you have to go to work. Baby can fall asleep in your arms in your bed. I don't think in the first 6-12 months I had a proper sleep. Buy bottles, steriliser, lots of onesies, nappies, wetwipes, and little cloths to mop up vomit. I would also get some paracetamol and neurofen for any illness. Not medical advice but if the baby spikes a fever in the first month then you take to emergency and you will be a priority and not need to wait.

In the future when the baby starts crawling around you will want to buy a play pen to just keep them there while you are doing house work.

  • We've bought the nursing chair, change table

    Return them.

I'm going to give you the best advice ever mate.. you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Baby items are HARD to sell afterwards. Use this in your favour! Sure, buy new car seats and don't buy second hand. But things like Boori cots, prams etc you can pick up second hand at a 10th of the price.
Pick good brands like BOB, Britax, Boori etc.
    Marketplace is king!

If you're in Melbourne we even have a free BOB pram and Boori change table and cot. All as new. Happy to help you out.

We even have a baby monitor which is great.
Yes it's your first born, but gosh it's such a waste of money looking backl

    • Boori cots are like the Camry of cots. New mattress, cover from Big W (their fitted sheets fit the mattress), and you’re good to go

If I remember, Boori cots you can remove one side and the kid can use it as a bed when they get a bit bigger

      • I hate Camry but yes they turn into a single bed.
Also has full spring mattress, protectors etc. Boori would have to be about $1000+..

Just goes to show how much money you can waste haha.

It's very easy to get sucked into prams and paying $2500 for a pram. Try selling one after you've used it… Lucky to even get $200 for it. People for some reason always want to just buy new.

      • But the OP will want the Supra of cots…

        • Owned an Aristo. So it's camry looking with a 2jz 😂

Thanks mate, but the other half is adamant on brand new for car seat, cot, cot mattress and pram.

Couldn't guarantee what people before had cleaned with is her thinking. Otherwise I'd be all over marketplace and clean myself.

What baby monitor do you have? So many have terrible reviews

  • join your local facebook pay it forward group. They always give away baby items for free.

  • if you get a nappy bin, save coin on refillable bin liners. sifting through haps of them we end up with biodegradable ones to do our bit. www.econappybins.com.au
