Website Hosting? Am I Getting Taken for a Ride

So I paid this company to develop my website so i signed up and was told at the end of it i get the source code and choose a hosting server ect ect
Now that the website is done they want me to have them do the hosting under there dedicated server which is going to cost $2000 for 3 years or something like that.
Anyways from what I was told the website was built on Wordpress.
He said I need to choose a dedicated server cause the website was built for a dedicated server- when looking at dedicated servers it’s like $300 a month! (So their offer is the cheapest) . If Basically this is a basic 5 page website, no videos or moving animations. The most high tech thing I have is a contact form which goes to my email and a map.

So my question is, does this website have to be hosted on a dedicated server (he said it was made for a dedicated server but it’s also just made on Wordpress)
Or can I just host this on a shared server.

Btw the website is not going to be high traffic (barely a few visits a month) . It’s mainly just to provide a website presence.

Thanks, my knowledge is very limited lol

    • It can be done, and I know people that do it, but there's lots of great free ways to build websites these days minus the domain name cost of course.

  • Their conduct deserves a name and shame imo.

Our work website and apps are hosted across ventraip and AWS with over 100,000 hits per month and we still pay less than that.

For what you're willing to pay, I'd insist that the project is built out on webflow. Atleast then all the security is managed for you.

  • Get the source code and database export, then DM one of the people in this thread who offered to help.

  • Why not use Yunohost or Freedombox? Host everything yourself. get a domain from somewhere else if you like. In this day and age it probably makes sense to DIY. I just use old laptops or SBCs.

I've been playing with old android phones for self-hosting, lately.

  • Devs use WordPress because it's easy for them to make the website using it, and for you to make updates yourself on it.
From within your WordPress admin portal you should be able to export the site + DB and then migrate to another provider with the flat files.

We have a multi tenant box at work with hundreds of these sorts of sites on it, sorry to say you're being taken for a ride.
Also ensure you have the domain registrar logins along with DNS host so you can update settings accordingly to migrate away from this crook.

    Best of luck to you!

You are absolutely been taken for a ride. You’re basically talking about a static website with a few pages and low traffic since it’s targeted. The only metric you would care about is uptime. You could get it hosted with many reputable web hosts for like $5 a month.
