40% off Pyrex (Measuring Jug $6.60, Mixing Bowl $9.90, Storage Container $8.40 and Roasting Dish $13.90) @ Coles

670

First time posting.

Went to Coles Earlwood, NSW, to pick up some food and saw these Pyrex items on special. Limit of 12 each it seems via the website. While stocks last I assume.

40% off currently is very cheap for some good quality cooking items.

EDIT:
Regarding PYREX vs pyrex (borosilicate vs sodalime), the roasting tray is PYREX (Made in France) and is Borosilicate glass. I confirmed this via the packaging material provided.

The Storage containers and the measuring cup are not (USA made/sodalime glass) and therefore will shatter on quick temp changes.
I could not confirm the bowl sorry as I did not purchase but images online show its made in france and would more than likely be the same material as the roasting tray (Borosilicate glass)

Hey guys, please support this iconic company! They're in Chapter 11 bankrupcy protection in the US and need all the help they can get!

  • Who makes a decent 1L measuring jug if we hate pyrex?

    • +5

If you're OK with plastic, I'm a fan of the OXO Good Grips Angled measuring jugs

        • As suggested by the choice of liquid in the promotional photos, perfect for measuring bladder capacity if you are an older gent with an enlarged prostate etc.

Sorry but this convo has gone off the rails. We started talking about borosilicate vs tempered glass, with the issue being that borosilicate is more resistant to thermal shock. Having said that, it's also got boron in it, which apart from being poisonous (not that it necessarily gets in your food) increases the environmental impact upon disposal.

Thermal shock being only an issue when putting very hot things in or baking the item, or taking it from said hot temperatures to very cold e.g. Fridge/freezer. In which case your plastic jug could end up a molten mess, how is that better than a glass jug? Not to mention the fact that the oxo good grips one is selling for 22 bucks which is about 2.5 times the price.

I have the 500mL pyrex jug and I can't fault it. Sure I don't use it ever day, but I have had it 6 years and it goes in the dishwasher and still looks brand new. No plastic is going to hold up like that in the dishwasher.

Tl/dr: get a grip people, it's a tempered glass jug and more than fit for purpose

          • @Jackson: Sorry if the recommendation offended you.. Lol was just trying to be helpful..

            • @ZT: Sorry if it came across as a rant, it was a response to you but also a general response to how this conversation was spiralling

          • @Jackson:

it's also got boron in it, which apart from being poisonous

            Boron is a trace mineral

    • I use a scale 99 times out of 100. Even if I'm using a measuring jug, the nice Oxo angled ones, they can never be as accurate as gravity.

      • +15

Last time I used a scale instead of a jug the water ran everywhere.

      • +1

Depends how you're measuring the impact of gravity.

      • I use a scale for flour, I don't trust myself to scoop and level a cup properly. I always use a scale for liquid too, even when measuring oil for a fuel mixture.

    • Ikea VARDAGEN jug - the material is not listed, but my guess is that it's borosilicate glass.

I also have one of each kind of pyrex jug. I think soda glass is fine for a measuring jug because I'm using it for measuring at room temperature or heating liquids in the microwave so I'm not taking it over 100°C. I'll stick to borosilicate for use in the oven though

    • pyrex is perfectly fine to go from room temp to boiling liquid.

just don't go from frozen to boiling.

  • Are these the good Pyrex or the bad Pyrex, I can never figure it out.

    • +6

lowercase 'e' so the lower quality one.

    • +1

      yep, Richard is right.

I remember it the other way… if the logo is upper case, it's better.

  • This measuring jug is the worst measuring jug I've ever bought - the lip isn't designed well so when you pour liquids they run down the side of the jug

I threw it out in disgust when I finally replaced it with a set of Oxo silicon measuring jugs.

    • +2

I find this too, however I think it has to do with pouring speed. It works with a very slow pour, but I agree it's a bit of dicky design. I still like me lil jug.

      • +2

+1. I had the same issue and found that slowing down fixed it. Hasn't failed me yet across a few different sized cups.

    • +1

Yup I have one too and it's terrible, liquids run down the side. I perefer my OXO jug.

    • Omg I came here to rant about this but got distracted by upper and lower case names…

This is true of two different 1L ones too

    • +1

500ml OXO jug is currently 50% off at Amazon.

  • Tell him the price!!!

    $6.60

  • what roiastdish

  • +1

What.. no price on title? Where is JV?

    • Sorry first time posting

    • +1

      Fixed

  • +3

Avoid if you value your sanity in the kitchen - poorly designed spout makes everything run down the side when trying to pour…

But the worst part about these is the labelling rubs off after about 6 months of use even sooner if used in the dishwasher despite being labelled diswasher safe. It is not etched so at that point becomes utterly useless as a measuring jug.

  • Limit of 12 ! = Coles buying price likely around 50 cents!

  • They have both pyrex and PYREX stock at my local coles
