They're better than Ippudo or Ichiban Boshi

Them's fighting words. How are they better?

    • True as it's a personal taste and I've only had the Tonkotsu on all. Personally the broth is a tad more balanced so easier to drink. Lighter than ichiban's, but I find it has a bit more flavour. Heaps lighter than Gumshara too. Hakata's reminds me of Ryo's in Crows Nest and Mr. Ramen San in Melbourne a bit. My 2c lol.

Ichiban's gyoza is definitely better though.

      • How about compared to a
        RaRa?

        • Not sure as I haven't had Rara since pre-covid days and I only had the Paitan which wasn't bad. I did have Rara Chan's gyokai tsukemen a few months ago which I highly recommend.

    • Ikr. Ippudo isn't even at the same level as Ichiban Boshi..

    • I've tried Hakata Gensuke in Melbourne and think it's better than Ippudo and Ichiban Boshi (in terms of value) but I think that's not saying much - I feel ramen is in general much worse in Sydney than in Melbourne.

That said I also feel the quality has gone down for Hakata Gensuke when I went a year ago - broth was less rich compared to years ago. It's not terrible but doesn't seem worth writing home about anymore.

Still worth a try when it opens (even at full price) but it may be not much better than the many options nearby.

I've had this spot a few times while in Melb but I do think Hakatamon (Chatswood branch specifically) is better.
It's not bad at all though and probably has more seating than Hakatamon.

    • Agreed, Hakatamon is probably the best ramen I had in Sydney. Ryo’s gets good reviews but they use ramen that’s similar to egg noodles which I didn’t really like.

  • imagine the number of people

    • Yeah that place is always full of people especially it's near Uncle Tetsu's.

  • 22 days? But i want ramen now!!!

  • Always lines in Melbourne. Don’t get the hype.

    • It's great ramen, I go there most times when I'm in the CBD.

Though there's a place literally directly across the road which is also pretty good, forgot the name though.

There's a new one now as well which is called Mensho Tokyo which is just beside them lol.

        • Oh nice, didn't know about that.

I like how in the store image on Google, you can still see a bit of Hakata Gensuke!

      • Shujinko?

The crap thing about Hakata Gensuke is that they don’t include an egg in the ramen (I think).

Onsen Japanese near Southern Cross also does decent ramen.

        • Nah it's Musashi Ramen, I've seen Shujinko a lot but don't think I've ever been there, will have to try it out.

And yeah iirc you need to pay like an extra $1.50 for the egg at Hakata Gensuke.

    Christ.. 20 bucks for a ramen…

  • The broth was nice here however the portion size is tiny for the price you're paying, only 1 thin slice of chashu when I had it in Melbourne

    • +1

very tiny and overrated for the price

  • The opening date has been pushed to the 4th of August.

  • Sold out at 4:30pm for 5pm slot wtf
