6 months. I have a side business which i am building up / online….once that gains traction i plan on not even showing up or notifying them.

  • You mentioned a couple of times sales are way down, what percentage would you say compared to 6 or 12 months ago?

Also curious about the difference between AU, USA and UK.

Aus and USA packages are always well boxed but UK shipments the exact opposite, A shipping lablel slapped on the retail box, not great for an expensive graphics card left on the ground as it wouldn't fit in the mailbox!

Strange that a global company has such different operations policies between countries?

    • Aus and USA packages are always well boxed

Depends on what you buy and I am noticing more 'streamline' packaging method is being used. My most recent package form Amazon US is just the item inside an envelope. Even for AUS ones, discs used to be packed in a custom designed cardboard box. Nowadays, it's often just a standard padded bad or paper envelope with the discs inside.

      • true but its only UK that ships the item in the original retail box with no additional packaging IME.

        • My Amazon UK product did at least come with an envelope. The UK one I received was in a retail box at least. My most recent Amazon US one is OEM packaging, doesn't even have the retail box (and no, I did not pick green packaging option - there wasn't such option anyway). It is not even in sealed packaging.

I reckon it is product dependent.

Before we used to pack say 8,000-9,000 a shift. Now it's 4,000 to 6,000 in that range.

USA will ship however it wants despite the product, had a mug shipped in a "padded envelope" which wasn't even padded …. yeah… idiots

do you count sheep or packages when you dream at night?

    • i work in one in japan, i can say ive shipped them, packed them and even sorted picked items in my dreams its that bad…..

  • Has the pantry items been successful and are they increasing the range? I’d imagine Amazon could sell most types of cans/boxed foods at better rates than Coles/Woolworths after lots of price hikes lately.

    • +2

To be honest i rarely have packed anything coles sells that amazon sells except for toilet paper, nappies and bundaberg ginger beer….and few bits and pieces. Amazon mostly sells books, toilet paper, tissues, baby wipes, nappies….think along those lines and cosmetics products they make up the most of the sales…and you have legos sometimes, pet food…

  • Why do you think ai robots cannot do this job ?

    • +4

They probably can. I hope they do.

ive worked in shipdock for japan, packing and STI reactive ,these are not fun particularly packing is far less demanding than Shipdock or STI, im probably (going to pretend to remain outside of japan until prime day is over ) i can imagine how bad Australian amazon maybe but it will never top japan

  • Is any part of picking or packing automated? For some reason, I was under the impression that most of picking and packing would be done by robots.

    • Picking is almost all automated at kemps creek sydney…..at moorebank i think picking is still not automated and packing is not automated anywhere in sydney amazon…or anywhere i think.

  • 4/4 my large boxes (90cm long?) arrived with flaps open on the top side. Item inside was smaller than the box. Tape did not stick to the box at all.
There was one time I had to return an item and it was difficult for me to repack with the normal packaging tape (tape not wide enough with no support underneath).

Has this been highlighted as an issue?

  • Do you ever have to deal with returns??

I know they usually get bundeled up and auctioned

    • Not trained for returns, never touched returns.

I buy off Amazon daily, I'd say for me amazon has a success rate above 90%

by success I mean - I pay for an item, then I receive it within their advised delivery timeframe undamaged by transit.

However, I've noticed a common trend whenever I order washing baskets (from various amazon sellers including amazon itself). Every time i order a washing/laundry basket the delivery gets delayed then undeliverable. Every time i get refunded, but i have still never received a laundry basket from amazon.

This has happened to me 4 times in the past 2 months (i now just buy mine from kmart) for different amazon listings.

Based on the updates i get it sounds like it never leaves the distribution center. Do you know why this may be the case? I'm imagining the sheer size of the product may have something to do with it.

I rarely encounter this issue with other orders, only laundry baskets.

How regularly does one need to order laundry baskets? I've been using the same one for 10 years…

      • +1

If the order never arrives, yet you are very persistent, then you will find you may need to order it very frequently

      • I think he's trying to say he's tried to buy a laundry basket off Amazon 4 times without success. I've had a similar story but with WD Red hard drives… which are much more expensive

        • yes, thankyou for correcting me. I tried to buy a laundry basket off of Amazon more than 4 times

    • Probably gets broken during transit by courier

I will post photos with how the computer screen looks when a cart is scanned….Items scanned….i'll get some photos of how prime week looks in the warehouse.

    • Are you allowed?

      • +2

I'll blank out all details that one must not see. Small details..

        • +2

Check that you can take photos at all. You may find that there are policies that forbid it entirely.

      • No, Photography is forbidden beyond the security checkpoint.

    • +2

      Don't

      • i like your name, it's twice as good as mine

  • Who decides what to pack where?

Eg I had heavy like 3x2l laundry detergent in a box next to a small light item that of course got obliterated.
I've also had box tissues individually packed in own boxes
Sometimes the same item, once in a box, once in a bag

    Seems to lack common sense.

    • The computer tells you what box to put the item in. You can override anything the computer tells you, so in your case the packer could have override it or who knows…

      • If the computer tells you to do 1 box - can you change it to 2 boxes instead?

        • Almost 99% of the items that i have packed and everyone else has packed leaves in 1 box. In the multi large pack section, customers who buy few items….say 4-5 items….all that ends up in 1 box.

Small multi items is another section of packing, customers who buy say 5 deodrants all get packed into 1 box. Or say customer buying 4 books or 40 books, they all go into 1 box.

  • Are you allowed to flag a product as damaged while picking or packing so that it doesn't end up going out to a customer or does the process and performance metrics discourage identifying damaged products?

    • +2

We can do the following once we scan an item, item damaged, item not scannable, or missing. Some scan a damaged item and send it because it's quick and less headache. I never done this, if i see an item damaged i won't bother packing it. Not many damaged items i come across, probably one every few shifts if that.

  • I’m curious when buying Amazon devices like an Alexa or a fire stick. Is the device modified before it goes out to the customer since they already have been setup with wifi passwords etc prior and the customer just plugs them in and it works

    • +1

Not sure how that works, we just get given products in packages or whatever they come in and we pack it. Not sure what happens before it gets to us.

  • Tips on avoiding fakes? eg. friend bought a cookbook - nope, it was a notebook with the stolen front cover art of the cookbook

  • can you buy stuff physically or do you have to purchase online and get it delivered?
