Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 D - $116.95 (Shipped)

40

Sometimes, it fells good to put personal touch by using manual prime lens. You are in control. Forget the buzzing autofocus, just you and the object :)

This is a manual lens (D -Lens) for DX Body (ie. D3100, D3200, so on) you have to adjust your focus manually. If you are fuss free type, you can go for the 50mm f/1.8 G which has built in internal autofocus motor

However, 50mm F/1.8D "become" autofocus for FX Body

This is the cheapest so far, other sellers may have cheaper lens price but with shocking shipping cost (cheeky bastards)

Tips:
Before you mount it on your DX camera, set the aperture ring to 22 and lock it (orange switch), you can thank me later LOL

    WTB coherent english.

If you have a DX body with focus motor (e.g. D90, D7000, D300S), auto focus is still available. However, as the OP pointed out, using the nifty 50 on D3x00 and D5x00 means no auto focus.

    • 50mm on DX body actually become 75mm (50mmx 1.5 crop) I forgot to add that

      • You are revise it if you like (since you are the OP).

People in the market to get the prime lens probably know that.

        • That's fine. I asume most of ozbargainers are well informed

It's amazing that these lenses become more affordable :)

When did people start referring to the Nikon 50mm f1.8D as the "nifty fifty"? I've always thought it referred to the Canon 50mm f1.8

Edit: To those that will neg me, seriously I've only seen "nifty fifty" used to refer to the Canon 50mm before seeing lens deals on OzBargain…

+ve voted your comment to offset the negative.

I thought nifty fifty normally just refers to a cheap 50mm prime. Every system has one I thought (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc…). 50mm prime lenses are not hard to make (except those with really really low f values).

However, goolged Nikon Nifty Fifty… people think the 50mm f/1.8 G AF-S (the DX lens) is the Nifty Fifty for Nikon (fair enough, since that one works on ALL DX body with auto focus).

I've always seen "nifty fifty" used to refer to the Canon one because that was the only one that was cheap at around $100-120 in Australia where as the Nikon is usually $140+ (prices would have fallen since I was looking around at the beginning of the year, I know the Nikon has).

I am not the only person using the term "nifty fifty" on cheap Nikon 50mm prime lenses. I used it in some of the comments in other lens deals and people did not seem to mind.

Well, for nifty fifty lenses, generally, I get them from direct import sources. The Canon one is less than $100 ($95 or less), the Nikon one (1.8D) is about $110-$115.

With these cheap 50mm prime lenses, price is an important factor.

Let us not play splish splash with canikon war, I just post cheap Nikon lens hahaha ….

Not playing splish splash with the stupid Canon v Nikon war. Just curious as to when did 50's other than the Canon.

Also if you own a D7000 the aperture ring can still be used, you need to go into the custom settings f6 to change the way the aperture is controlled.

    • Yes, same goes for D90, D300S as well.

Basically, this is the cheap 50mm prime to get if you have D90, D7000 or D300S since it will be still usable once you upgraded to an FX body.

      • One reason why I got one… although it's gonna be at least another 5 years before I go FX, probably get another DX to replace my D7000 before I get a FX. Going to be a while before I upgrade to FX….

Upgrade-ability from DX to FX shouldn't be a major factor in choosing lenses (unless you know you're going to move really soon). Most people would take a while before moving, there's the cost and photographer ability limitations to be considered. These lenses are so cheap that by the time you are ready to move buying a new one to suit FX and throw out/sell your old DX lens wouldn't add that much of a cost relative to how much you'd be forking out to buy a FX body and zoom lenses for the FX.

        • Would be nice to go FX coz. strictly speaking on a DX body, it is not really a 50mm.

Like you pointed out, by the time you go full frame, chances are you would prefer a better 50mm prime than 50mm f/1.8D (or you would have a better lens to use it with the FX body).

        • FX is definitely nice and when I do get there I'd definitely aim to pair it with either the Nikon f1.2 or f1.4. My f1.8D is most likely going to be relegated to my DX bodies only once I move to FX. Or gotten rid of altogether and replaced by the 35mm f1.8G.

        • f/1.2 eeew. Manual focus :)

        • Only reason I'm considering the f1.4, but there is a certain appeal with manual focus to me though, it's more your own work that way.

  • how credible is this site? the contact number seems to be from WA (08) but it's shipped from HK? where is this company actually located?

  • I want a 1.4, so will wait.

  • Also, lol @ the ratio of votes to comments. So many photographers on the bargs!

    • So is this a good deal or not? LOL

      • It's only good if it's not grey import, but it seems like it is as I can't find them on the official retailers list from Nikon.

It's not bad exactly as it is within a few dollars from HK/eBay but it is not the cheapest available.

    • Yes, too many comments on this deal.

Is this a good deal? Well, +2 votes so far… so… I think the answer is obvious.

These are probably the same lenses as the ones coming from Hong kong on ebay for $109, i would be weary buying them.

  • Need canon :(

  • +1

Wow so many comments and not a single one mentioning grey import etc or that there was a better deal a few weeks back (lol).

$104 shipped with 2 free caps, cloths, and bags from the good ol' cameras direct who also include gst so good for trs.

  • Personally I would instead be buying an manual 50mm legacy lens in great nick for ~$40 and an appropriate mount adapter for ~$10.
