I Think I Received a Resealed Game from JB Hi-Fi?

I recently bought 2x clearance XBOX1 games from JB Hi-Fi online. Looking at them side by side, one appears to be new and one resealed.

Game #1 has the Microsoft seal along the opening edge of the case and the plastic pouch seal is even, smooth and neat.
Game #2 has no Microsoft seal and the plastic pouch looks crudely shrink wrapped. I think it has been resealed. Since I haven't opened it yet, I don't know the condition of the disc inside. Maybe it's perfect, maybe it's not…

Given these are clearance games, that I didn't pay much for, I am not too bothered. But, if I had bought a full price new game, I would be feeling cheated.

Is this legitimate, normal practice?

  • Does is pass the sniff test?

  • JB Hi-Fi does reseal games unfortunately. You can tell straight away if it's shrink wrapped or a Y-fold copy.

    • If they reseal a new game, that seems ok.
Do they reseal used games, and sell them as new? That would be dubious…

      • +1

Nah they'll be the EB Games definition of "new" which means they open it, take contents out, put box on the shelf for display then at some point put the stuff back in and reseal.

They tend to do this more with the cardboard box editions when they put game case and any extras (poster cards, map, booklet, audio CD etc) back in then shrink wrap the whole thing.

The pre-owned section I have never seen a sealed copy. It's not worth their while to do so.

        • That seems reasonable/logical, taking the contents out to put an empty box on shelf.

@nige0090: I don't personally agree. New means NEW to me i.e. brand new factory sealed and I refuse any product that's already been opened.

Hence rarely shop at EBGames anymore. But acknowledge to each their own as many don't seem to care.

  • That reminds me, some years ago I bought a new sealed external USB HDD from Dick Smith.
When I got it home and checked it I could tell it had been used (maybe from the SMART Data? Can't remember) and resealed. Probably a used customer return
They replaced it when I complained.
But that seemed actually dishonest. Selling used goods as new.

  • What does EB Games do with the games you return within 7 days, do they sell them as used or new?

    • I think they might be sold as "new" because pre-owned would mean that they've been traded in, not returned?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, it would be good to know for future reference

      • I suspect that EB would like to sell them as used, so they don't need to pay the publisher. But EB have already paid for it from the publisher/distributor so it doesn't actually matter does it?

        • I'm just speculating right now, but I've got an old mate that used to work in EB. I'll have an ask and see what he says.

  • I opened the resealed game earlier.
The disc & other contents looked perfect and unused.
So probably an item opened for shelf display and then resealed.

  • This is standard practise.

EB Games does it everytime someone returns a game within 7 days. They just restock it on the shelf as new.
