Minor Hit and Run - Do I Need to File a Police Report?

Last week someone reversed into my parked car and lightly damaged it. The guy drove off without leaving a note. Luckily I have a dashcam with parking monitoring, so I got his license plate and the whole incident on video.

I opened a claim with my insurer (AAMI) and they are investigating. Do I also need to file a police report?

  • honest questions - did you provide the video to AAMI? did you ask them if you need to report it to police?

I did provide the video, but I forgot to ask them about police report.

Their phone support sucks, I don't want to waste another hour just to ask one question..

Call the police assistance line on 131444 and just report it anyway. Get a case number to add to the claim, it may help.

Send a few men around to the guy’s house.

  • Do I also need to file a police report?

Yes. You will need the driver/ registered owner details. Insurance is supposed to do this for you. But they are getting lazy these days!

    • Police won’t give you that info

      • They did for me.

        • They’re not allowed to

      • They do, if you asked nicely but usually insurance need more than owner's details, ie drivers details.

      • They will, if you have proof if it was a hit and run and you want to send them a letter of demand.

They are not allowed to under privacy laws.

          • @jv: So Victorian police have different rules than other states? In Qld if you have the registration number they will give you the owners name and address for the insurance claim.

@Leanne59: Don't sound right meaning anyone can find others details, I'd say you need some kind of evidence otherwise they will only give to insurance company.

              • @nwa: No they give it direct to the person needing the details to lodge the insurance claim. The insurance isn’t going to call the police to get that information as it is the customers responsibility to provide the details or pay the excess.

100% report it. they will get a ticket for doing a hit and run and maybe they will think twice about the next time they want to be a scumbag

    • They'll just claim they didn't notice hitting the car.

      • +3

They'll still be fined if the cops are doing their job.

      • They did notice in my case.

      • +1

Then they will get neg driving.

      • Their 'ignorance is bliss' attitude is what causes so many 'accident'.
You can see this on Aussie Dash cams weekly. It's no excuse. They have to cop it.

Infuriating when people are in la dee da land and feign their innocence.

  • Thank you all for the answers! I will file a report.

    • 100% mate.
And submit it to AAMI too.
What was the damage done? How much do you think it will cost?

  • +1

Yes, do it. I had the same situation and dashcam saved me. Police gave them a "call".

AAMI need (I think) 3 forms of their identification to avoid you paying the excess.

About a year ago, I was hit from behind but the other person drove off. I had dash cam which caught his plate. I took that info to the cops, and they got the drivers name and address (said after they spoke to him, he said he didn’t realise even though there was a loud bang)

I gave the details to AAMI, and I avoided paying the excess

  • Hi OP, do you have update with this?

The same thing happened to me tonight. I got dashcam footage of the incident and rego plate, and need to call insurer and police tomorrow. But I was wondering if the insurer or police managed to help you in this case? I'm with Suncorp, who owns AAMI, so hoping to know if there are some things I need to do to avoid being pushed around… I think it is possible for me individually to request the owner details but it is painful and requires a lot of forms, so if the insurer does it then at least I can push them to doing it.

Yeah, I reported to the police, it took them about 2 weeks to find the driver. Then they said I can negotiate with the driver directly or go through a small claims court.
AAMI was useless, haven't heard from them since I lodged my claim.

      • Thanks for that. Looks like it won't be as easy as waiting for insurance to do their job…

        • So quick update from me. Police found the details of the other driver and was able to give it to me. I called Suncorp but they already got it from the Police, and excess was waived. So it was relatively painless for me in the end.

From my experience with QBE comprehensive, plate number and footage video were all the things they need. I think they have a security team or something to get the information they need from the police.

I scratched someone's car and couldn't locate the owner nor had a pen and paper to leave a note, so I went online and filled out a police report, trying to do the right thing.

I never heard anything back about it.

It's probably just my pessimism, but it seems like the police aren't interested if they can't give out a fine for it…

    • Should have mentioned it happened right after you were going 120 on the freeway and they would've been onto you in a flash 😂
