Best 4k Blu-Ray Player to Replace Xbox One X

Hi all,
So after about 5 years (3 of which was running in an apartment with salty air near a beach), my Xbox One X is starting to show some signs of age and use. It has the occasional error reading discs of any type and I use it most days to watch blu-rays.

I don't really use it to play games as much these days, so not necessarily looking for a console upgrade, but would like a great 4k player to pair with my LG C2 and Samsung q990b

I have a feeling I missed some great prices by a week in regard to the Panasonic ub820, but maybe someone here knows something I don't and can point me in the right direction. Preferably looking around that ~$500 mark for a player around that quality.

Thanks

  • Panasonic if you want a good UI and great features. Sony if you want to play 4k rips or any other file formats. Lg if you want a cheap one that just plays discs and doesn't do much else very well. The LG is the cheapest and the Panasonic is the most expensive. They all go on sale so wait if you can.

    UB-820

    • Any way to get it cheaper than ~$750? I'm pretty sure I saw it was ~$500 just last weekend

    Why not a used/refurbished replacement one x?

    • It's had other issues, as I've alluded to, in general over time as a blu ray player. It won't play certain special features, for example, without any real explanation. Also doesn't support Dolby vision and can have some problems with frame pacing randomly depending on the disc I put it. These may all be specifically tied to my Xbox, but I just think it's time to get a dedicated player

Xbox consoles don't make the best players. Since you've pointed out DV though, keep in mind that not every standalone player supports it, either. Make sure you don't assume and check that whichever one you gravitate towards lists it.

      • I found that my xbox one x wouldn't play certain titles, after numerous factory re-inits (using the OSI or whatever its called) i eventually put a SSD in and it fixed all those weird playback issues.

BUT, i agree that gaming consoles have shit lasers that degrade after a certain amount of time (PS4/PS4 were particularly bad)..

        • I never had any issues with mine straight up not playing a title, but I'm curious as to which ones? And was there any pattern?

          • @Ninternet: It seemed quite random.. but regardless after replacing the actual HDD it has (so far) been perfect

Ended up chatting to JB support and they knocked $200 off the UB-820. Not the cheapest, but good enough!

    • Was that a price match?

      • Nah, I guess it's a 'JB deal' that they provided as a "negotiated price" according to the receipt

        • Cool. Thanks for the tip

    • Enjoy, great player
