Where to Buy Auto Wire?

Why is wiring so expensive.
Need 8 and 10 AWG auto wires and it is so expensive.

Maybe I've got the wrong search terms but Jaycar, Supercheap and Amazon all have prices north of $20 a metre.

Where do you buy cheap wiring that won't burn your vehicle down?

Supercheap is $3 per meter or is this not what you're after?

Repco has 50m of 8 AWG at $163 club price, $192 standard.

You don’t buy cheap heavy duty wiring for your car, except from a reputable seller. Cheaper wire usually means less wire more insulation. Plastic is cheaper than copper so they rip you off by making it look fat when it isn’t current rated.

    • OP has already stated their preferred gauge, which is measured off the conductors and ignores insulation thickness, so they should be fine regardless of brand

But yeah, it's definitely an issue on things like cheap crappy booster cables without any AWG rating that look chunky, but have an unusably thin copper core.

      • Some of the cheap extension cords are the same. Massive outer insulation, and skinny sparse innards re. copper.
They may be rated as X amps, but I reckon quite a few get warm real quick.

      • so they should be fine regardless of brand

Except some less reputable suppliers will try to palm off less conductor more plastic cables in the hope that you don’t really check the conductors.

8 AWG is 8 AWG. If a seller is offering a product as such then it must meet the spec, otherwise it's false advertising - same as for any other product.

You get 'less reputable suppliers' in every market, not my fault if they lie to their buyers.

          • @Switchblade88:

If a seller is offering a product as such then it must meet the spec,

And this is exactly why you should oh a little more and not buy it off the cheapest eBay/aliexpress seller because those seller tend to just make up stuff and resell the cheapest products they can find.

It’s not about it being 8AWG or not, it’s about getting what you order.

  • Jaycar has 8 GA power cable (tinned) for $7.45 per metre. Not sure where you got your $20 from.

Link for $20/m cable? Surely it has to be for like a 2-5m reel

  • You want good wire, not cheap wire.
    Wagner Electronics?
If you are only doing it once auto sparky

    • You have to be careful with Wagner electronics though, your gear may stage a coup at some point

      • boom boom.

(oops sorry. Probs not the best wording)

  • Bunnings have Narva auto wire in the electrical section.

  • Bunnings have 6mm^2 Twin-core & earth for $6/m. That's better than 10AWG. (Why are you using seppo units?)
Just strip off the TPS for DC use.
8 AWG is a little over 8 mm^2. How many amps do you need over what distance?
That is big wire. 2mOhm/m , So 0.1V/m at 50A.
