Wow not too shabby at all. According to this review it is mostly beating the premium end of the market:
    https://www.techadvisor.com/article/1927322/lexar-nm790-ssd-…

No DRAM but uses system RAM for cache. TBW is a winner. Under $300 too, so good tax time write off for next year…

    • +4

You mean a terrible tax time write off. A good tax time write off occurs in june so nyou wear the full cost for shortest period. The worst time for tax write off is july purchases.

      • Good in that it's under the 300 dollar instant deduction rather than having to depreciate over multiple years…

    • It's a quick drive for the price. I got the 2tb model a few weeks back. it can get pretty toasty though. Mine hit 73 degrees the other day and that was with the mini fan on my gigabyte x570i blowing directly onto it.

Kinda wish this deal was available earlier as it is similar to the price I paid for a slower 4tb pny cs2241

    • how would you write this off on taxes?

  • Should be 232L YMTC TLC + DRAMless MaxioTech controller (unless they moved to QLC for 4TB)

    ps5 support?

    • +1

Apparently so according to OPs link. OP doesn't mention needing a heat sink so it must already have one?

      • Needs heatsink. Mine hits 73 degrees on my PC with a little fan blowing on it.

        • +1

73c isn't that hot. I mean it's not ideal but my old 960 evo runs as high as 97c on a performance test and it's been going strong for 6+ years now as a boot drive.

          • @Tythefly86: That seems toasty to me?

My Lexar pcie 4.0 drive hits 73 degrees with a little fan on it. My PNY pcie 4.0 only hits 60 degrees with no fan. These were reached with 5 runs of crystaldiskmark.

            • +1

@DangerNoodle: Yeah they are known to run hot. Apparently that's just the controller though, according to HWinfo forums. Samsung reports 60c on the drive. HWinfo has 3 temp sensors on the drive and sensor 3 gets to 97c.

              • @Tythefly86: Turns out the label that Lexar put on top is a thick insulator. I tested label - thermal tape - heatsink vs no label - thermal tape - heatsink, full load temps dropped from 73 degrees to 53 degrees, and the temps drop back down much faster without the label either. Warranty info seems to only be on the bottom label so I took the risk.

  • Got the 2TB for $134. Seems to work well but will be using it a secondary drive in the new build

    Will this PS5?

    PS5?

there should be a bot that answers these endless questions from folks who refuse to do an ounce of research.

    this will ps5.

    Will this run Crysis?

    • +2

      No, but it runs Doom.

      • and Gloom?

  • it works well with ps5, bought 2tb version last month ($144), need to add a heatsink(around $10 on ebay).

    • +1

There should be a free shipping option at checkout.

      • found it thanks :)

  • +3

this was the pre-order price (when the linked deal was posted). Then they increased it to 319… now it's a code to bring it back down.

I only know because I was keen on the drive. Ended up with a 4TB SN850X instead.

    • how much did you pay for that?

      • er yeah a fair bit more… $487.10 delivered from Amazon. I wanted this drive first though, already have the 2TB version as an OS drive. It's great.

        • (by "this" I mean the WD drive)

  • PS5 seems to be selling very well…

  • +1

got the 2TB version for PS5 from this seller few days ago,
all i can say is WOOOHOOOO!

so much room to breathe now lol

    • Just ran a few tests on my PC, the label they put on top doesn't seem to have any warranty specific information since it's on the underside label, but the label on top seems to be a thick insulator. I tried testing with label, thermal tape, heatsink vs no label, thermal tape, heatsink, and the peak temps dropped from 73 degrees to 53 degrees. Up to you if you want to do this on your PS5, I assume no liability for void warranties or damage.

  • Is this good for a second drive storing newer games that need ssd?

  • +1

I have the 1tb one, and I use it for VMs and Crysis 3. It is a very fast drive. I had the VMs on the system disk which is a Seagate 530. The VMs seem to run faster on the Lexar SSD. I feel the difference when importing logs into databases. Also, testing it with CrystalDisk using a 8gb file, the max temperature was 55c. The SSD is installed in the Add-on card that Asus provides with its Hero motherboards. The card has a heat-sink.
I am going to check the price on Prime Day, otherwise I am getting the 4tb from BPC.
I got the 1tb from them, and I will recommend them. The SSD took a while to get after being shipped. I told BPC, and they chased Australian post. I am happy with their service.

  • What's their warranty service like ?

    • It's standard 5 years warranty, NM790 is fairly new so I do not have stats for failure rate yet.
