  • Supposedly very little difference between this and A80J that can be had for a few 100 cheaper during JB sales

No J's left at JB ao probably wont get that low again

Also most of these OLEDs have limited lifespan and if you check out how quickly dead cells appear in OLEDs you would stay away from these early gens…
But yes would prefer the Sony over Samsung but damn the QD-OLEDs are a good step up…

      early gens??

Sony has been selling consumer OLEDs on mass since 2017 and this is the 2022 model.

I got the XR55A80J (2021 model) for ~$400 less than this over 6 months ago. Some reviews rate it slightly better on some aspects, slightly worse on a couple of others compared to the newer K model.

Agree though, if you can score a J for near $1300, like it was back in March, then don't think twice.

      Picture and sound are outstanding.

This is not too bad a price, but suspect like the J it might drop a bit more over time.

I would suggest doing some research into the LG panels being used by Sony…
The newer LG MLA OLED and Samsung's QD-OLED panels have great improvements and are somewhat affordable…
Just saying if you have bought a Sony they are great TVs…, I have one myself…
But I rather make people aware of the real world problems of OLED screen burns and pixel degradation that occurring after a few years of daily use…

Very aware of all that you stated as I do a significant amount of research before purchasing any item that I'm likey to be using for several years.

In standard use I have not heard of any "real world" problems with IR or burn in or A80J or K models (using the LG panels), but happy to be pointed towards any evidence of it.

Admittedly, after 5 years this might be different, but these models are too young to know that yet and introduction of things like pixel shift settings on more recent (not early gen) models should reduce the chances of this markedly.

The QD and MLA OLEDs come at a significant price premium, so yes while they are superior in many ways, IMHO they are hardly a bargain yet compared to the A80J & K and many users would not notice much of a difference in day-to-day use.

I owned a plasma for over 10 years and heard all of the same caveats, but being aware that you would have a problem with IR/burn in if you kept a static image on for hours, I didn't put it in this situation and it was never a problem for me.

I'd argue it is the same with these models of OLED in "real world" use and with just a little commonsense I doubt it will be much of an issue. Even with FTA channel bugs, there is still turnover with ads or change in TV program in a timeframe that means pixel shift is sufficient to minimise the chance of IR. If you don't leave a paused game image on the screen for hours and don't use these OLEDs as a computer monitor, then in "real world" use they should be fine for many years to come.

Whether this price is a bargain compared to some of those past A80J deals though is the more important consideration here.
