Ripped off by a Car Rental Company [NT]

Hi,
I went interstate and booked a large 4WD (Pajero). After making the payment the guy gave me Outlander (4WD) saying the Pajero isn't available. I had no option so I took it. It was 6 yrs old car with a terrible engine and a few things not working. His website stated unlimited kms but when I came to return he said I need to pay 45c/km. This rate was in no T&C's or anywhere on his website. He had no documentation or paperwork and was making up all the T&C's and said he doesn't have to show me anything.

I ended up paying $215 for extra kms and wanted to charge me one full day of rent as I came appx. 1hr late even when he said I can come late when I spoke to him that morning. I was going to miss my travel plans so I paid and left.

I later found that Outlander rent was $25/day less than of a Pajero. Now the guy isn't giving me any invoices or answering me. I am quite upset about all this. It seemed like that the guy has done it to many others as he was so shameless. I felt like I was in the Bali Jetski scam. He even said that he got my driver's licence and he will see me etc.

When I saw the Google reviews I was surprised they were 4.7 but all fake reviews. I don't know how to ensure he doesn't do it to others.

      No, it's a one-person business in NT.

Why didn't you just walk out and not pay the extras?

    • Some of my luggage was still in the car as he was going to drop me off to my hotel (which he didn’t). He held my luggage hostage. He was expert in this.

It's at this point where I would have said you're no longer interested and contacted your bank to do a charge back if they don't refund your money

    • There were not many options in Darwin for a 4WD. Sixt had one but they were closed Friday to Sunday. I looked at the positive reviews on Google which turned out to be fake.

  • Taken on a (Outlander) ride!!!

Was this the only rental for the area? If so, then hard to avoid or anticipate the dodginess.

Sad story but now I'm interested in the Bali jetski scam. Never heard of it.

Yeah id stay away from the one man rental shows. However the big end of town rentals rip you too but more predictable and you can avoid it.

What is the car rental called?

Also - credit card charge back

Also - police report for threatening behaviour. They will give him a call

Sucks to hear, but take it as a lesson. Make sure the details are in writing.
