Video Vs Intercom Doorbells - Some Advice Please?

Hi all. I'm currently quoting and organising to try and get an alarm system and CCTV setup. Likely going a Dahua NVR with TIOC cameras or normal 6mp WIzsense.

As part of the CCTV setup, one supplier can setup an intercom (dahua) for $1000 :

Seems like a huge markup but alot of intercoms are quoted around this price. Any reason they're so much more expensive than video doorbells?

Few questions for the brains trust:

1) Is POE wired or traditional electrical wiring preferable if going wired route ? I know some battery video doorbells allow electrical wiring - assuming battery changes would get annoying over time?

Is POE wiring best done by an electrician also or data cabler is better suited and cheaper?

2) Is my understanding of how POE doorbells are setup correct: power point POE switch/injector device with ethernet to router and POE cable out via roof into front doorbell cavity ?

Can you plug into the dahua NVR given it POE to security cameras or not cross compatible to use brands NVRs?

3) Are there any decent video doorbells with an one off purchase subscription or no subscription at all, apart from eufy? Just want a decent app that is responsive and does the typical remote access functions and viewing.

4) can you hook up any brands to smart home assistants like google in order to get an indoor screen and chime?

5) What brands would you steer towards and away from? A few I've seen online that have wired or POE (and also wireless) include eufy, reolink, Mubview J7 Wireless doorbell cam, Wyze. There's other like Ring, Arlo and GOogle nest but I believe they are quite heavy on the subscription cost?

We need app access /live notifications, indoor chime and any indoor monitor is a nice to have but not essential. Happy with head to toe views if camera quality is still decent otherwise we could use the cctv to view for packages in favour of a better quality video doorbell.

Anyone regretted having battery or found ones with long life stacking up to advertised durations?

  • confused on what you are asking, wired = poe, same thing
POE means power over ethernet, so the camera get powered from the ethernet cable

a wired camera is always better then wireless, faster, pre-load, pre-buffer, higher quality, less lag, less compression etc.

    • wired being electrical wires, like old school doorbells i thought? And POE wired being seperate?

      • Just pick the brand you want, features you want and then the budget and get it installed…

The type of Wired video door bells you mention is likely just a wifi camera with a hardwire power, changing battery is annoying yes

Watch a youtuber name LifeHackster he does video doorbell security camera reviews

        • Well that's part of the reason I'm asking. There's so many brands, and many have similar overlapping features on paper… hence the question on experiences. Otherwise if i could pick all of those there wouldn't be any question to begin with.

I'm still abit unsure where the confusion is: wired by electricity is just like old school video doorbells. Power cords, and POE as you mentioned is via a different power source. They both get power … but hence my question on people's opinions having used either.

          • @SaberX: Ok think about this. The wired by electricity "old school video door bells" where do you think the video is transmitted from? Or where is the data coming from? Because the positive and negative wired wont be carrying data

    • and no need to recharge, our work had wireless cameras set up and operations team never though about recharging and they all need ladders to access

  • Too many question marks
