Android Tablet for Square Reader

I’m after a brand new tablet, around 8 or 10 inches, that is compatible with Square Reader and USB OTG. It will just be used as a POS system, with USB cash drawer and printer, so massive hard drives and RAM aren’t important.
Laser won’t confirm any of their devices work, and the best alternatives SquareUp confirm work are the Lenovo M8 and M10 (about $115-135).

Has anyone used a cheaper tablet for this purpose and confirm they work? Just wanting the best price for a new business, keeping the costs as minimal as possible.

$135 is a decent price already, (presuming Square delivers on that promise).

Any cheaper or stranger could lead to a slow and sluggish interface, with lots of troubleshooting to be had.
There's a reason why Apple ipads are often used - software only needs to work on a small number of ipad models, whereas guaranteeing those on Android is basically shooting fish in a barrel.

    • 100% would rather use Apple, but price is a problem (second hand and refurbished)

I have confirmed the M8 and M10 work

I think your best long-term bet is likely a Samsung tablet, as they have the most frequent updates when looking at budget android tabs. The 2022 Lenovo Tab M10 Plus from memory promises 3 years of Security updates (not sure if bi-annual or quarterly), but Samsung appears to be the the leader iby having 4 years of quarterly updates on the budget tab A8 lines.

The Galaxy Tab A8 however is about a year old and so have about 3 years remaining.

Worth considering iPad, if you have the Square stand then it'll give you USB ports.
