This looks like a long running as it has been available since 2021. Not ultra fast like the Telstra $1 deal but it's free instead, has unlimited data instead of 1000GB and cheaper for those who stay with Vodafone after the first month. The same deal is available from TPG who have the same plans $5 cheaper but the conditions about returning the modem are not as clear.

If you cancel within 36 months, you won’t need to pay out the modem as long as it’s returned to us in Good Working Order within 30 days of cancellation.

Now to find their 5G signal…

    • +2

Check if any of your neighbours have 'covid', if yes then you're likely to be good to go.

    • +1

Their 5G signal slower than Telstra 3G

    • they have 5G signal at a lot of places, But it just website does not support the address with 5G.

I think you can order at your friends house (supporting 5G with website) and take modem to your home) and should work without much problems, just keep address on file as of the friend's house

      • Apparently Telstra geo-lock their 5G home internet service to your address so make sure TPG / Vodafone don't do the same thing. See below from the Telstra FAQ section.

Can I use my Telstra 5G Internet Modem 2 at another address?
No, your Telstra 5G Internet Modem 2 is geo-locked to your home’s location, which means you can only use the 5G Home Internet service at that address.

If you are moving to a new address, you'll need to cancel your existing 5G Home Internet service and order a new one.

        • +1

I got the info from a friend who recently moved his modem from old home to another place. He told me he had to do nothing.

    • Our place had 5G signal when we signed up last Nov and lost 5G reception since Easter all of a sudden…No one knows how to fix it and what happened…

  • So this is cheaper than most nbn plans. Seems good.

    • Slower too!

      • +1

You can get very good consistent speeds with this assuming the vodafone network isn't experiencing any issues but good luck trying to game on it, The ping is always through the roof.

    • +1

      far less reliable

    • If you’re going to get this, get it on Black Friday when it is half price for $35 for 12 months. However, unless you have Indian heritage I would not recommend it because ALL call centres are based overseas and neither you or them can actually understand what each other is saying. On top of that, the people in the local stores have no access to do anything to do with your account apart from look at your bill, same as you (if you’re lucky) so they can not do anything to help you if there are any problems.

      • -1

Pretty certain most carriers use Indian or Philippines call centres so can't escape that…, but surprised the CCP haven't tapped into that market yet…

        • +2

Yeah you’re probably right but it was when the people in store said they were powerless to do anything apart from sell stuff, that was the final nail in the coffin for them. They said they “ feel for my situation “ and that they “get a LOT of feedback “ and told me I had to go and call the call centre again. Nightmare company. I personally don’t recommend them.

          • @Skatez: I got the Black Friday deal I'm regretting it very much. online chat and call centre are hopeless, keep providing me with misinformation. they charged me for the modem despite the fact I returned it with in 2 weeks of cancellation. After multiple sessions they told me the modem is in their warehouse, but they need me to call them back again in "48 working hours" to arrange the refund. Never again.

            • +1

@wintersnow911: No way! That’s one of the problems I had with them as well. Returned the modem in store and they charged me $339 for not returning it. There was plenty of other problems as well with the 5G and phone accounts I had with them. Can’t believe they’re probably doing this to many people and the late fees while you deal with their mistakes. (profanity).

              Thanks for commenting 👍

For 2 and a half years I get the same result.
5G Home Internet isn’t available in your area yet. However, your address may be eligible for a great value 4G Home Internet or Vodafone nbn™ Plan.

However, for 2.5 years I have had 5G coverage at home. Go figure

    • It's the same for..but Telstra and Optus as well!

At one stage Optus said it was available then after that it disappeared.

    • +6

They might have enough bandwidth for phone usage but not for home internet.

    • 5G internet runs on the spare capacity of the mobile network, so it’s a bandwidth issue (and potentially can vary from week to week)

    • Same with me, the tower is 1.3km away so I can kinda understand why - I wouldn't get enough 5G signal inside the house to have a reliable broadband connection, but I do get 1-2 bars on their low frequency / 700MHz 5G on my phone. They don't people saturating that, which is why they typically only offer 5G home broadband to people who are really close to the tower.

The deal itself may not be bad. Vodafone is obviously cheaper than Optus and Telstra, but if you are not lucky, it may come at a cost of your time and nerve cells.

Here is my story of dealing with Vodafone appalling support. I had their 5G home broadband for 1.5 years since it became available in my area, and it was working fine with occasional faults which were resolved by restarting the modem. The regular average DL speed was about 170-200mbps.

But in December 2022 they suddenly made a "network improvement". The DL speed was down to 4-7mbps. Upload less than 0.2mbps. I couldn't even run a meeting in Teams!

Spent literally hours on the phone talking to support but no one could provide me with valid advice, rather than "restart your modem, put it in another room" and further bs. One consultant was absolutely sure that it was a sim-card fault. Asked me to insert it in the mobile handset and check if it can connect to internet. Another consultant was telling the opposite - home broadband sim-cards are not designed to work with mobile phones at all. Finally they thought it was a modem fault. Made a visit to the store, exchanged the modem (it takes about 1 hour as well) and the sim-card. Didn't help.

Another call, and the support consultant checked the coverage and informed me that there was no 5G in my area. After 18 months of service! The answer to my legitimate question why - was "probably(!) Vodafone network engineers made an improvement to the network, that's why there is no more connection in your area, as your broadband was piggybacking(!) from 5G mobile service, and with network improvement it's no longer working this way, please handover the modem to the store and switch to NBN". Sheer incompetence of Vodafone support staff is stunning!

Switched to Optus $99 unlimited 5G. Speeds are great with average at about 600mbps and it comes with free Netflix as well. Vodafone - never again.

I had same experience. Changed to boost and it all works. Vodafone can pack their bags and cut costs

    • +2

My experience is a little different but related to a similar service. I was on the TPG 4G Home Wireless Internet for almost 2 years and left them early June. I was getting 20Mbps down constantly when I signed up in Oct 2021 and it was faultless until April 2022 when it all started going downhill. Speed was similar to you - about 4-7Mbps and constant calls to TPG and they kept blaming my modem and where it is located even though it hasn’t moved location since I got it. My sister had the same service and lives 200m away from me and when my was bad so was hers. I kept telling TPG this and they kept giving me the runaround like you. Between Apr 2022 to May 2023 there was never a month where it just worked. Oddly enough when I submitted my cancellation request in May, it was brilliant for the last month but the damage was already done.

I know my experience was on the 4G service but whether it’s 4G or 5G, I don’t have much confidence in a Vodafone backed service in my area. It might be OK for others but my advice is to do your homework. Make sure you keep your current internet service for the 1st month you do the free trial with Vodafone so that if the TPG / Vodafone 5G home wireless sux, you can send it back and continue using your existing service.

their customer service is rubbish, I was misinformed multiple times.

    • +1

      … network improvement …

When your download speed drop from 200mbps to 7mbps… cost less and same profit, wasn't that an improvement for them ? XD

    • Their network improvement is getting rid of you lol 😆

  • Vodafone is crap. The signal is next to nothing in some areas. I had hopes initially as I like to support an underdog. But these guys are chihuahuas in a dog war

    • +2

Telstra is crap where I live so I guess it depends on your location.

    • +1

Your 5G isnt moving. Use the $1 or free trial with Telstra/Vodafone and if its not acceptable, just return the modems.

  • Used this for a month before our Opticomm fibre was connected. Service was excellent, low latency and about 180/25 even during peak. We’ve got a tower close by so my experience may differ from others. Certainly a good alternate if you can get a signal. Modem won’t do bridge mode which was a bugger, but wifi signal in the house was surprisingly strong and didn’t leave any dead spots. Gave it back before the month was out, so didn’t pay a cent. Just returned router, to local Voda store.

    • Which vodafone plan were you on that time sorry ?
is it the 100 Mbps plan or the grandfathered unlimited speed plan (where you got 180/25 speeds ?)

  • -1

The only problem I can see, is that you’d become a Vodafone customer.

    • Optus also have 5g first month free if you prefer their responsible data practices.

      • Nah, they are only slightly above Vodafone in the barrel

        Telstra all the way

  • $45 TopCashback

Another $5 off monthly on mobile plan bundle.

TPG/iiNet’s 5G home internet is cheaper by $5/m

  • -1

It must be my eyesight, but I swear she looks naked in that little thumbnail photo

  • Spectrum between 5G mobile & home internet it’s different, ex Radio AM FM. my area narre warren was on 4G network and just recent couple months ago become 5G. 5G home internet still not available through all Telco, even though Optus has put 5G network last year in my area.

  • Total min cost if you return your modem
    $65.00
    or
    $70.00
not the "$0 for The First Month" at all

  • No minimum cost, the will be no charges if you return within 30 days, so perhaps best to return within 28/29 days

  • +1

If anyone is getting the vodafone 5g internet deal, be sure to stack it with TopCashback AU cashback,

Or just go with like TPG instead, they got same deal as Vodafone BUT NO CASHBACK DEAL (like with Vodafone and Topcashback AU)
