Laptop Descriptions and Specification

Hi am looking at buying a refurbished laptop and confused with some of the jargon. Just want it for general use, nothing to expensive.
What does Laptop HP EliteBook X360 830 G6 5PE04AV i5 16GB RAM 256GB SSD” or “HP EliteBook X360 1030 G3 i7 8650u 1.90Ghz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD FHD Touch Win 11” mean and is there much difference in the two.
Cheers. John

Links? There's much more to laptops than what is provided in the title.

Important parts of a computer include:
CPU (processor) - brain of the computer
RAM (memory) - affects how many programs can be open simultaneously
Storage - Capacity to store programs / files on the computer

The descriptions above try to cram as much info in to a short field.

    Laptop HP EliteBook X360 830 G6 5PE04AV i5 16GB RAM 256GB SSD

    • HP - Brand
    • Elitebook X360 830 G6 - Friendly Model of the laptop
    • 5PE04AV - Technical model of the laptop
    • i5 - Processor style. No specifics on which model of i5, there is a large range. Based on the HP site for the model, it'd be the i5-8265U CPU, which will be good for general use.
    • 16GB RAM - memory. More than sufficient for everyday use
    • 256GB SSD - Storage. Depends on what you're using it for but should be great for general use, storing some photos etc while performing well in speed

    HP EliteBook X360 1030 G3 i7 8650u 1.90Ghz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD FHD Touch Win 11

    • HP - brand
    • EliteBook X360 1030 G3 - Friendly model of the laptop
    • i7 8650u - CPU. 5 generations old, great for everyday use
    • 1.90Ghz - CPU base speed. Great for everyday use
    • 16GB RAM - memory. More than sufficient for everyday use
    • 256GB SSD - Storage. Depends on what you're using it for but should be great for general use, storing some photos etc while performing well in speed
    • FHD Touch - Refers to the screen. FHD == Full High Definition, means 1080p. Touch refers to the screen being touchable for input, like a phone screen
    • Win 11 - Operating System. Most recent version of the Windows OS.

If "everyday use" refers to web browsing, banking, YouTube / videos etc, either computer from their specs should be fine. From a pure spec rating, the 1030 G3 would be better.

If both are similar prices, look at other things that may be important to you such as

    • Screen size
    • Advertised battery life
  • Thanks for that great information
    Cheers. Hol

Tip: When reading Intel CPU names, you can determine the year by ignoring the last 3 digits.
      For exmaple, above the i7 8650u or i5-8265U = 2018
      i5 9500 = 2019
      i5 10500 = 2020
      i5 11500 = 2021
      i5 12500 = 2022
      i5 13500 = 2023

The last three digits indicate performance. Higher numbers equals more performance but usually more power consumption.

This would be incorrect. The preceding digit(s) are the generation, not the year. Example would be the 13700k, released Q4 2022 (start of October, from memory)

        i7 8650u was released Q3 2017 (source: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/124968/…)

        The i5-8265U was released 2018 though, Q3 (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/149088/…)

        • You are correct, but this is close enough as a guide— most laptops with those chips were released 1-3 months after the chips.

      • this is a bit inaccurate and hides too much information.

        i5 8265u ->

i5 = the medium product segment of that generation

        8 = 8th gen.

265 = fancy suffix, indicate the specific model

u = low voltage CPU (H indicates high performance)

6th gen ~ 9th gen and half of 10th gen, all uses intel 14nm process node hence similar per clock performance, so you can judge by Core count, Gigaherz (and L3 cache if you gaming). from 8th gen they starting to increase core count on every product segment, but per core performance is the same up until 10th gen.

some special 10th gen uses 10nm process node, so is 11~13th gen, although 10~11 gen uses very similar internal design, and 13th using a refined design of 12th and are similar.

        so:
        6~10 gen - Skylake
10 gen (partial) - Ice lake, big step up from previous
11 gen - tiger lake (similar to ice lake) small step up from previous
12 gen - alder lake (still not much different to tiger lake, but come with big.LITTLE cores) small step up from previous
13 gen - Raptor lake - refined Alder lake. small step up from previous

8th gen is around 2~3 gen ish behind current design. It's not amazing anymore but still alright.

    Pro tip:

When asking for comparisons of tech gear online, post up links to the product specs to save the nice people on the internet some time so we don't have to Google around and find the source info.

  • HP generally means overengineered.
    Buy what you really need.
