Looking for HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter (Not USB Powered)

Hi All,

I'm looking to connect a Monitor which only has a DVI and DisplayPort to my Laptop which only has HDMI.

I got the Monitor for free from my old workplace, previous boss let me know they were giving them away.
these monitors used to be hooked up to Micro/SFF PCs which had dual DisplayPort's.

I found these two options but they're USB powered, is there anything cheaper and/or not USB powered?

There seems.to be plenty of DisplayPort to HDMI Adapters but not the other way around.

If not, has anyone used these and can attest to their quality/reliability?

TIA

        • !@#$%^&

    • Non-bidirectional. Only works the other way around.

      • yep, just noticed that too…

I had a similar issue with a monitor with no HDMI inputs left, and just ended up getting a HDMI to DVI cable from OfficeWorks.

Have you considered that there might be a technical reason the only ones available have to be USB powered, and accordingly have to be more complicated and expensive than just a cable?

It can be done the other way around with just a cable because DVI-D and HDMI already existed when the DP standard was created, so DP++ ports are designed to be backward compatible and detect what they are connected to and generate the right signals for it. HDMI and DVI-D ports send the same format messages, but don't have the capability designed and built into them to generate DP compatible electrical signals. The electronics to do that adds complications and cost, and needs to get power from somewhere.

    • Right so in layman's terms, these are my only options. gotcha

HDMI to DVI - obvious answer.

Per above, provided the monitor DVI port is free, best option is HDMI to DVI cable (I use this myself), cheaper and doesn't need USB power
