Charles Sturt University - Online Course

Hi

I have done my Masters in Computer Science (Project Management)

I would like to study Bachelors of Education (Secondary) Major (Mathematics).

I have applied with local universities in WA but when I went to open.com.au, I came across CSU which 100% online

https://www.open.edu.au/degrees/bachelor-of-teaching-seconda…

Now, I read few forums (from 2017-19, nothing latest coming up in search) and online CSU is not good. Also, people mentioned that they have to find their own prac work.

Has anyone got experience with online learning in same field and give me some update.

  • CSU is fine but youd be as well placed to go via UniSA and not have to find your own pracs (well, maybe you might, considering you're out of state - call them all and ask).

However, my question to you is, why teaching? I mean, if you feel like it's what you need to do, by all means. But limiting yourself to $100k for life after 10-15 years and putting up with the endless crp….

I can think of better things to use a Masters of Comp Sci on.

    • Sorry, I totally forgot about this post in forums.

I have been working with small company for almost 10 years. I got the admission earlier this year in Medical Radiation but course being full time and my partner not well, I had to drop out of that course.

In regard to Computer Science, I have been trying to study but no jobs starts with good starting salary. (I did my masters in Project Management in IT).

With teaching, I am really good in Maths and I have heard, people earning 120k per year. (I tutor year 8 student at someone's place)

Again thank you for your reply

      • The only people earning $120k are leaders or teachers after reaching Step 9.

To reach step 9, you need 206 teaching days x 8 years. Then you have to apply for the last step. That takes 2 years on average. Then thats it. That's your cap.

Youll have a good chance at permanent with maths though. But if you can last the 10 years, youll be going against the current industry norms.

Highly recommend joining some teacher forums on FB and maybe WP

        • I wasn't aware of this. Thanks for the info. I will check and join some groups.

  • I did a grad dip psych with CSU 9 years ago..

    It was fine.

I found studying online requires more self discipline as you don't have the "in class" opportunities for discussions. However there are
online chat groups. Also the recorded lectures allowed me to replay parts so i could clarify and refine my understanding of the lecturers points (when required). Because it was online i could study at any time - as i had young kids i could put them to bed and then go study.

After completing online with CSU, i did post grad on campus. For me the "in person" course was slightly better as i liked the immediate ability to ask questions . Also to be able to talk to peers in person about stuff was reassuring.

I'd do online again with CSU.

I'd imagine that with covid and online delivery improvements that it would be better.

Considering you have considerable tertiary experience then i dont believe you would struggle with online

    • Sorry, I totally forgot about this post in forums

I just send them a message as they have some conditions under requirement and I am not sure if I qualify for it or not.

It is very hard for me to leave my job and study so online study is the main option.

Again thank you for your reply

  • +4

CSU is a good university, and specialises in online learning. Anyone that says otherwise is a clown.

    • Sorry, I totally forgot about this post in forums.

Thank you. I have sent them a message so I will hear something back from them soon.

Again thank you for your reply

  • Currently doing a Bach of Wine Science online with CSU, about 3 years into the 6-year course.

I find it really varies from subject to subject, but overall, it's been really good and engaging.

Some subjects feel like the coordinator puts in minimal effort, we have to watch old lectures, no weekly zoom tutorial classes, all the assignments or quizes are online.
Most of my wine based subjects the teachers were pretty passionate about the topics and subjects.

My course involves some subjects 100% online, but normally require intensive res school where I travel to campus for a few days to a week depending.

Sorry, I totally forgot about this post in forums

I am in WA and not sure if I can travel but having course totally online is really good.

I think, by looking at the job market, I would be able to find prac work easily in WA.

Again thank you for your reply
