Is It Better to Accumulate Points or Fly with The Best Price Airline?

The big question, is it worth sticking with one airline to accumulate points, or just go for whoever has the better price?

I have Qantas and Qatar, Singapore, Etihad and Emirates points. The first four only a few, but with Emirates I have three lots of business class and if I rebook with them, even more. Although I really like Emirates does it make sense just to book with them if a better price is available.

Sorry if it's a silly question, but I don't really understand these things.

Personally I would seek the best price unless I was specifically saving up points for something like a free business class flight.

The points are usually worth 2c or less so I expect a cheaper flight would always win out.

  • I usually go for better price!
Points are very less vale for money
If you hold gold/ higher status, the benifits of status might outweigh the cost difference

  • Thank you both.

Unless you're actually a frequent flyer for which having gold or better status may offer some value in its own right (and which usually depends on status credits anyway), always go for best price. Points are gravy on top for most people.

You should also look at paring back your frequent flyer programs to consolidate points earning in two or three programs. Consider booking any future Qatar travel to Qantas or Velocity, Etihad to Velocity, Emirates to Qantas and Singapore to Velocity.
