Takeaway Food Hygiene Hypothetical Question

Imagine you had just ordered your lunch at a takeaway joint.
As you wait, you watch the team busily preparing orders, and you can see your food being made.

You notice the worker sneeze over your food. Not an awful one, but enough to spray directly into your lunch. They dutifully wrap up your food, pass it to the counter staff, who call out your number to collect your lunch.

What is a reasonable response to this scenario?

Hypothetically you'd just use your rewind laser to rewind back time to before the sneeze and then call out to them to turn their head away from your lunch.

    • +1

(this answer assumes the existence of a rewind laser, if you don't have a rewind laser, I suppose you could hypothetically use your tissue-shield laser to cover the food the instant when the sneeze happens)

      • +3

Wait until invented, then rewind back to this moment.

        • reminds me of the Time Travellers party that Stephen Hawking hosted :)

      Any deals on rewind lasers?

How was your subway lunch today?

    • +2

I didn't know how to respond at the time. I passively took it and binned it, and now working out what to eat

      • +4

        Scrub the word hypothetical then.
You sure you're not a recently disgruntled subway assembly agent?

If this 'really' happened you missed the boat. If you're adult enough to order adult food, then speak up. Ozbargain opinions won't embolden you. And silence won't change piss poor food handling behaviour.

        • +1

It wasn't subway, but same deal. Others' opinions give an insight to how one should approach the situation, and what is a reasonable response. That is beneficial to me. I know I missed the boat, I didn't know how to respond in that moment, hence my curiosity now

@A-H: "Excuse me, I noticed someone just sneezed on my food while preparing it. I'm happy for you to try again, properly, otherwise I'd like my money back please"

That way things ;might change'.A good business owner or manager would not be happy to have staff costing them $$.
If they give you attitude, you're eating at the wrong place.
            If so.
Walk away, and give an accurate online review - at a later date. Tell your friends not to eat there.
The "sneezer" (even if via an unexpected pepper storm) should have binned the food , washed their hands & started from scratch.

You are responsible for your money, and what you eat. Your voice in your head knew what to say & do. Act on it.Unlike the sneezer

Surprised there's not a poll for what you should have for lunch, now.

      yup easy guess

Why, whose food do you intend to sneeze on?
Just consider this. What about all those unsavoury characters in kitchens out of sight?

Which fast food do you eat. I'll tell you some hypothetical hygiene stories.

Ignorance is bliss. It's the knowing that ruins it

    • I always strongly prefer places where you can see the food being prepared, for precisely that reason. I think it is a big deal and would be a great idea to put phasing it in into the Pure Foods Act. A camera in the kitchen with a TV screen would do if places don't want to start ripping down walls.

      • …..fly on the wall…..

I think there's a few tacky 'reality' TV shows built on the concept. It can't hurt. Good training and the right worker attitude is paramount. Sorry to say,but the amount of those suitable ppl in the 'appropriate' generation all want to stay home and work.
        Too 'special' .

  • why worry about a little sneeze… think about all the chickens, cows and others

One's a matter of hygiene and aesthetics, the other a matter of being a douchebag ethics.

as a true ozb - complain and ask for 50% off and still eat the food and happy know i have score a bargain

    • +1

It's surely illegal to knowingly sell sneezed on food. And if not, it should be.

  • +5

What is a reasonable response to this scenario?

"Could I have one without snot please…."

  • Did you have a swig of milk, shake of pepper and sneeze on the money before handing it over?

  • Sh*t in it, wrap it up well and hand it back to them saying, "On second thought, lunch is on me today. You deserve it more."

  • My old pizza place had one hand wash station (aka a sink) and the owner of the store would often put large machinery in front of it, I suspect he believed the 30 seconds it takes to wash and dry your hands was costing him money. The same sink was used to rinse seafood in too.

It's best not to think too hard about how clean your food is. Until robots come along to make all our food who will have AI that makes them do it perfectly.

If you see staff washing their hands a lot, or wearing and frequently changing gloves, or wearing masks even when the health department isn't mandating it, then that's probably a good sign.

  • postal
its the last straw that tips you over!

  • Gross. Everyone who works in hospitality should be trained to sneeze into their elbow (and face away from any food whilst doing so).

Even if you asked for a new one there's probably aerosolised mucus particles floating around the food prep area, the best thing to do would be to ask for a refund and go elsewhere and hope that no one sneezed on anything before you arrived.

  • I don't feel comfortable when they sneeze into their inner elbow when they look away, but I am fine eating the food they prepare in this sense.

But if they somewhat directly sneeze around my food, I will ask to prepare another one with politeness.

I was at a wagyu steak restaurant in Japan that had an open kitchen. I saw the chef cough directly onto the steak he was cooking, so I asked the waiter to cancel the order. Honestly did not want them to make it again because I didn't trust the kitchen after that.

    • What was the marble score?

      • Can't remember, but the it was a small amount (maybe 100-150g) and cost between 50-100. So probably pretty good.

I suppose coughing on it might increase it's marble score depending on what comes out…

      • 'garble score '

    • Watched the guy preparing rice at the sushi franchise in a shopping centre food hall while I waited for my lunch from the place next to it.
      1. He was using his bare hands to mix the cooked rice.
      2. He licked every one of his fingers 'clean' so he could serve another customer.
      3. Handled the cash with his bare hands.
      4. Went straight back to hand mixing the rice.
      5. I never considered buying anything from that franchise again.
      6. For days after I mentioned it to anyone that I thought may go near there.
      7. Report made to the local council (responsible for food safety).
      8. Found them on the food authority penalty notice lists a few months later.

If the takeaway is something I have been craving and looking forward to eating it for lunch, then I would ask for a new one, explaining what you saw. However, if I was just ordering the food at that joint out of convenience then I would go somewhere else. It would put me off seeing the staff being unhygienic, ignorance is bliss.

  • This is probably why i could never work in subway.
