Thoughts on 4G Internet?

currently pay $79 with optus nbn with 50mbps. don't really get anywhere near that speed.

was looking at cheaper alternatives and came across their 4g plan for $59 with 25mbps.

just curious if anyone has experience with 4g optus? is it ok to switch and save $20 per month?

Just set your phone as a hot spot and see how the speed is.

I had it back when it was called Vivid, I still had it when it transitioned to Optus.

There were significant periods of very obvious throttling. Particularly during peak times. The quality of the 4g was less than what you would expect on a phone.

The only reason I had it was that it was easy to move between houses. You just put the modem under one arm and left.

I probably wouldnt go back to that, although I dont know if it has improved since.

  • Superloop Extra Value Plan - $59/m for NBN 50Mbps that you will actually get ;)

    https://www.superloop.com/internet/nbn

(switch to a new plan like ABB once 6 months done)

  • I was using a phone plan with large data caps for about 2 years before my place was eligible for FTTP upgrade. My thoughts on 4G internet is that it was ok, but not for gaming because the latency was quite high. It was weather dependent and was slow during peak times. I also noticed there were a lot more maintenance/outages on 4G compared to NBN, so maybe have your mobile number on a different carrier network to your home internet in case you need to hotspot off your phone for a short while.

4g performance will depend on your location and distance from tower.

don't go with the optus 4g home internet, it's unlimited but it's capped at 25mbps. you might get better speeds at a cheaper price using a normal phone plan + 4g b818 modem, eg amaysim, mate, etc. depends on how much data you want.

but first just look at your mobile phone for an indication of what speeds you might expect.

    • don't go with the optus 4g home internet

Second that… was using a data SIM from one of their tablet bundles- maxed out at 15mbps in a b818. Switched to free boost Sims and get a solid 100mbps.

Also noticed 4g is heavily impacted by the weather, especially heavy rain.

  • Go on iinet, there are trials, they send you a free modem. For me, it was sux, unless you live under a tower.

  • Optus mobile broadband support are script jockeys and will NOT be able to help you with anything more than restarting the 4G modem you get. Move RSP and get them to fix the NBN speed/reliability.

As you have seen Optus support knows how to deal with NBN issues like the deal with other issues, which is not good.

If you use a lot of data, internet by 4G (or 5G) costs a lot.

If you don't use a lot of data, you get a lower price and a faster speed through the phone network than you get on NBN.

So, for example, Belong will sell you a 100 Mb/s 100GB/m service for $35/month.

And I pay $59/month from Woolworths because I get a 10% off shop per month, and I get a phone and a data connection for my home LAN for that, rather than paying for a slow internet connection and a phone as well. I'd have to plug in the phone to charge it when I get home, I still have to plug it in, but it gets charged from the router in one direction through the cable, and gives the router an internet connection in the other direction. And because its a 5G phone and I'm in sight of the tower, that internet connection is 250 Mb/s.

  • Did you check your address for FTTP upgrade availability?
