Recommended Lounge Brands?

I'm looking to get a new lounge. What is the best bang for buck lounge? Any experiences with quality, warranty, service?

As someone who worked for freedom in retail sales…… I wouldn't even consider freedom in my window shopping list for furniture or sofas. But their kitchenware and mattresses are pretty good.

  • I paid up and bought a harvey norman couch for fool price, because it had lumbar support. I'm very happy with it. Most supportive couch I've ever had.

I only have a cheap couch from Amart, but it’s very supportive as well. It’s always telling me to believe in myself.

TIL fool price = full price

      Fool and his money…?

        That wasn't a typo :)

  • It's tricky to say, I think a lot of the places have gone down in quality.

We had the hugely popular 'York' sofa from Harvey Norman, bought around 13 years ago. The fabric (combination of vinyl and micro-suede) was amazing and it was so comfortable. I regret replacing it. We bought another lounge from HN 1 year ago and it has been very disappointing - too low to the ground (I swear it wasn't that hard to get out of in the shop) and the back cushions get out of shape. It isn't as comfortable to sit on for long periods and is (now) very obviously not anywhere near the same quality. I don't know if we were unlucky in what we picked, or if they've declined in quality. My parents bought leather recliners from HN about 5 years ago, they're very comfortable and have worn ok - one of the arms has more wear on it than you'd expect for it's age.

I personally wouldn't buy from Freedom having seen one of their lounges with the fabric wear terribly in a couple of years and Freedom tell them it was normal wear and tear and refuse to do anything (friends', so I have no idea how much they pushed them).

Don't rate my sister's Ikea couch, it was one of the dearer models. I've never found it overly comfortable and it's sagging after a few years. It does get a lot of use though, so it may be getting unfairly judged.

Wouldn't go near Fantastic Furniture if I wanted something that was going to last.

I can't comment on Nick Scali's quality from experience, but it always feels like you're paying top dollar in there for the style rather than quality. Perhaps I'm wrong.

If I were buying another couch I'd probably consider HN and just be more careful about my choice.

The Nick Scali corruption links to the Liberal Party kind of killed that brand for me.

  • Id be looking at Berkowitz/Moran.

Currently have Freedom but they were purchased back in the day when they were good. Wouldn't go there now fo the price.

  • isn't harvey norman furniture just massively overhyped and overpriced

    • not if somebody gets an affiliate payment!

  • We have all of our lounge sofas from Focus. Decent pricing and the ones we picked were very comfy.

  • Pretty happy with my King sofa (it's less than six months old so that's really not much history). My neighbours are happy with their older ones.

Their delivery and repairs operations are a bit shit though- multiple issues with delivery, miscommunications between their teams. And QC was shit- the metal frame was bent at the feet out of the factory, and it took them close to two months to send someone out to rectify it- by bashing at it with rubber mallets. I could have done the same fix with a wrench but they told me not to touch anything and I didn't want to mess up a warranty. The backend operations seems a far, far cry from the very slick showroom side of the business.

    • My 13 year old King lounge is still good except the cats are slowly clawing it to death. The fabric holds up very well against that though.

how did uncle harvey get so many votes .. lol !!

    • harvey usually delivers, it just OZB bit bitchy about GST and TAX claims.

      • well, OZB is all about bargain … and i doubt Uncle HV can provide you bargain at all if any it will be top end of the price range on the name of aussie made nothing more in my opinion… !

        • I thought Ozb all about insurance claims and price errors 😆

Come on, there are tons of HN deals posted here regularly.

          OZB is all about bargain

In Kings Living? That place is expensive 😆

          • @boomramada: agree kings living is expensive but on the same token they have unique designs (thought not changed over last 10 year i have been to their stores).. !

            • @SydBoy: When I first moved here and saw the wooden Jasper armrests they're know for, I thought it was interesting and possibly useful.

Having seem what they look like after years of use, nah. Tacky AF and their veneered wood seems lacking.

Some of the other stuff I think looks good though.

  • What do people think of the Koala sofas? (https://koala.com/en-au/living-room/sofas-couches/lounging-s…)

    • A friend of ours bought a sofa from there. They’re great quality and look really modern. The fabric on their sofa is washable, a key consideration if you have kids.

We purchased Moran at the annual Myer sale for 40%+ discount on several occasions. The oldest sofa is 27 years old and is fantastic. Quality materials. An acquaintance who is in the furniture manufacturing business recommended Moran for quality and longevity. He was right.

    • An older relo has a Moran set, several decades later and still looks absolutely beautiful, the cushions still nice, firm and supportive.

  • Do you have kids? They will jump on the couch with dirty feet and spill food. Need good webbing and washable fabric. Get one from Harvey BUT pay double and make sure the manufacturer is Australian. It will last you for at least a decade.

  • I bought mine from Castlery a few years back when they were cheaper ($1500 for the Adams Chaise lounge), fantastic quality. Sadly their prices are much more expensive now, my sofa goes for $2500 now :(

  • Koala couches

  • Nic Scali for quality, although can pick them up off gumtree pretty cheap

Before you buy, check Facebook Marketplace out for that particular style and see how they age - some styles hold up better than others. I've always loved the leather cushion look when new, but if you see them after a few years, they go all sloppy and soft (comfy AF but asthetically eh) no matter the cost.

If the second hand ones still look good, they're probably going to hold up well. It'll also show you the key spots that wear more than others and may help you pick the covering type

  • If you have kids and/or pets then get one where you can remove the covers and wash them. We have a 10 year old sofa from Ikea that still looks pretty good as we can remove the covers, we have a newer one from Amart which is not holding up well.

  • I’m looking to buy a recliner range from Plush. Contemplating between the Mirow design or Cameo range.
I’m after something in fabric more firm as wife's got a back problem.
    Can someone suggest
    1) if anyone has any recent experience with either of the two lounges?
    2) experience with plush as a company and considering their recent reviews aren’t that great on product review?
