  That is not possible.

  Australian Apple gift cards can only be used for two purposes (and this in the gift card terms and conditions):

  • content, apps, and services from Apple Media Services
  • items from Apple Retail Stores, Apple online stores, and the Apple Store App.

  You can redeem an Australian Apple gift card onto an Australian Apple Account Associated Balance, but that balance does not interact with Apple Pay in any way.

  Meanwhile, the only two types of cards you can add to Apple Pay are:

  • Payment cards (i.e. debit/credit/prepaid cards that support Apple Pay)
  • Travel cards (i.e. public transport cards that support Apple Pay).

  Australian Apple Stores do not need Apple Pay in order to handle the redemption of Apple gift cards. For example:

  • On the Apple Online Stores, you redeem Apple gift cards by inputting the gift card code into the online checkout.
  • At a physical Apple Store, you redeem Apple gift cards by presenting the gift card code to the staff member at the time of payment and they redeem the code on one of their devices.

  To properly address your question, I have used Apple Pay a lot and have also added Australian Apple gift cards to my Australian Apple account, and can confirm from experience that Apple Pay does not support Apple gift cards nor interact with my Apple account balance in any way.

          When you compare the options (and yes, you do actually have options) of either gifting them or selling at a discounted rate… the choice is pretty clear.

          Also, you're not "making a loss". You're minimising your loss.

      Use them to buy an iPhone or Mac. Or an Apple TV and some headphones, the new Beats Studio look pretty cool.

    At least Apple finally combined iTunes/App Store and Apple Store gift cards, so you can use the same balance for In App Purchases and buying new Macs from the Apple Store. But yeah you can't use it as a VISA debit card through Apple Pay, if they ever did allow this then they'd stop discounts and the margins would be so low that no store would bother stocking the gift cards anyway.
