New Car (Lexus ES300H) Negotiation

Hello all,

I am in the process of buying a new car and I have my eyes on the Lexus ES300H sports luxury (RRP $89k).
I was wondering if anyone has any tips on negotiating a luxury car as I hear they are more lenient, and if anyone has purchased one lately what price they manage to negotiate it for and where.

Thanks all

Wear down the salesman’s resistance - One trick is to tell them stories that don’t go anywhere like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

How come whenever you see old Lexus' they always seem run down and falling apart.

I swear that all Lexus vehicles come from the factory with 120,000km on them. And I am not sure if it is standard or not, but faded paint, cracked leather and stale smoke smell all seem to be included.

Its because theyre built well and mechanically last long.

Theres a reason you dont see a lot of old mercs.

      • Theres a reason you dont see a lot of old mercs.

Mostly because we aren’t in Europe, new ones aren’t really common and the parts get silly expensive here.

    • Probably because like most luxury cars, values topple, but they are still pretty reliable, so they get bought cheap but still last well, when scarcely maintained.

Just ask for all the accessories

Buy a Toyota Camry and pocket the savings?

    • Get seat warmers and thick leather covers and the Camry is practically a Lexus.

Have you tried asking the sales person? What did they say when you asked them?

Just go in with what you think is a fair price that you are happy to pay and try it. The worst that they could say is "no" and you leave and either rethink your price, or you buy something else.

I think I'm going to start a car buying service for people where I just sit with buyers at a dealership, hold their hand and rub them on the back telling them they are going to be ok, and they just need to remember to breathe.

It’s a car, just like any other. ‘We’ have been conditioned that you don’t pay the sticker price for a car. Doesn’t mean much other than you feel good when you get a bit off list price. If you think the sticker price is too high, offer them a bit less (10%?) and go from there.

If they are trying to sell stock on hand they might even go a bit lower. If they have a draw full of orders and a wait list, you aren’t getting much discount. Sound out another dealer as to how long you’d need to wait for your new car. Will it be built when you order it, is there a ship load of them sitting in Aus or somewhere in between. That will be your ‘discount guide’.

Is the Lexus es a luxury car?

    • Yep… right up there with BMW 1 and 3 series, or MB C and E series, or Audi A class

    • The only drawback is look like a Toyota and smells like a Toyota. other than that good car tho.
Before you buy it, go test drive a C200 or at least 330i.

    Congratulations on retirement. 🎉

  • Don't buy the hybrid. Can't think of a more boring drive than a Toyota Hybrid (I have one, trust me).

Strangely enough plenty of people are more than happy with a boring drive. They get no engagement from driving and just want to get from A to B and reliably and efficiently as possible.

They're also 50+ and enjoying spending time in queues at Service NSW.

  • tips on negotiating

If it needs ordering, then FAT chance, otherwise, just ask based on your research?
Before COVID, they even let you take the car home for the day, those were the days.

    Awesome car btw

  • knock 5% off at least

  • Picked up my 23 es300h Sports Lux on Friday. Good luck getting anything other than MSRP. (Like seriously good luck, I wasnt able to)
They move pretty quick and stock is limited.

Great car though, yep Toyota Hybrid isnt the most "fun" thing to drive, but its comfortable and quiet. Uses (profanity) all fuel.
It's exceptional at what its designed to do.

    • Congratulations! Did you get accessories thrown in at least?

    • Thanks for the info. I managed to get the same model for $85.8k (rrp 89k) thanks to corporate pricing and got anothet 1k knocked off
