Japan Sim Card

My wife is heading to Japan for 10 days. Not knowing whether she'll have free wifi, I'm wondering whether she should get a travel sim. Any advice and/or recommended sim suppliers?

  • There are SIM card vending machines in the airports. I just picked one up from there and did me fine.

    • Thanks - any idea what price and data limit? Also, are there different providers and if so which are best?

This was a few years ago so don't really remember but it didn't seem expensive for a month-long one with more than sufficient data. There's lots of options, I think NTT Docomo was the one I got.

Failing airport, she can pop into any BIC Camera or large similar electronics store and get one there.

If you really want something sorted now beforehand, I've bought one of these from Sim2Roam for USA once and worked fine. Can't vouch for the Japan one specifically but I presume will work fine and it's only $25: https://www.amazon.com.au/15-Unlimited-Internet-downgrade-12…

It's not expensive. There are options at the airport, and some convenience stores or BIC Camera like Hybroid mentioned.

An alternative is to buy an E-sim before you go if the phone supports it. I use Airalo and it's quite good - more expensive than a physical SIM though.

15% off from this deal. They go on sale quite regularly.

I personally used SimsDirect for a 6GB eSim when I was there a few days ago. A little bit overkill but worked well enough. Had some trouble with Google Maps as it wasn't the best at locking onto my geolocation but got by.

  • Don’t know if it’s still the case but when I went 5 years ago, tourists could only get data sims. Fwiw
