Latex Matress Topper Recomendation

Hi all, wanting to buy a latex mattress topper. Just want some options from others that have bought them.

You can buy them for mid 200s from ebay and Amazon say they're natural latex. And then there's one's that are 700. Are you just over paying for these, or are they the only good ones and the Amazon ones are rubbish waste of money?

I spent waaay too long looking into this so am very happy to share my experience such that it is. I have not tried the cheapie ones and I do urge you to try if you're inclined so there's further insight, although you can see plenty of mixed reviews. My educated guess after some research (you can see the factories where they are made via Alibaba, where I posed as a buyer to find out more) is that the cheapie ones are mixed synthetic and natural latex, despite the vague claims that they're 'natural'. Whether this really matters is the question - natural or synthetic, they're all polymers and as long as they don't offgas with nasty odours, maybe they last a similar time.

However I didn't want to buy latex that's potentially grown from plantations that were made through labour exploitation or recent clearance of primary forest, so what I did was to fork out the substantial extra for one that was genuinely (by which I mean plausibly) certified, from these folks: https://sleeponlatex.com/about/our-certifications . I didn't buy directly from them as they don't sell overseas but Amazon buys from them and ships them. I corresponded with them by email and they were interested to see how Amazon packed their stuff, etc.

I got the 7.5cm (3") thick "medium" firmness latex. Firmness rating is 44 ILD - 5.9 lbs/cubic ft = D95 (kg/m3). In retrospect 3" was probably overkill, I think 2" might be enough depending on your bodyweight/preference. The price also varies with the density - more or less air mixed in with the latex, and more or fewer holes in the molding.

In an attempt to mimic the types of beds made by Ausbeds et al for $1500 to $1900, I paired this with a new super-cheap and rock hard Sleeping Giant mattress ('Extra Firm' - $500 on sale).

How does this combo feel? It feels really surprisingly great. I am certain it feels equally as good as the top range $2k plus mattresses I tried in various showrooms. It hasn't been a year yet so I can't vouch for longevity yet though.

Here's the link I bought from via Amazon. $740 delivered. Amazing that it doesn't cost more given the weight of the thing. In fact this is the main downside - that much latex means lifting the mattress to change the sheets is quite an effort. https://www.amazon.com.au/5-1cm-Queen-Natural-Mattress-Toppeā€¦

    • edit: example pricing for Ausbeds was wrong, it's $2,450 for latex-topped variety. I visited their workshop/salesroom and I'm sure they're worth supporting if you have the money for that - but I didn't.

  • Why latex? It's wobbly. Memory foam better in my opinion.

    • i think its because latex provide more support than memory foam.

  • I have a matress topper from Emma and it's amazing. It took a while to fluff up, but it's extra thick and supportive. Looks like they have a sale on at the moment too! The timing! https://www.emma-sleep.co.nz/mattress-toppers/

  • I bought a Tontine Comfortech Memory Foam Mattress Topper from Target when it was 50% off and it's been really great.
