Online Price Lowered after Purchase - Not Yet Shipped - Won't Lower Price

I know I am probably screwed anyway, but wanted to get other peoples opinion.

Purchased an item on Friday. It isn't shipped yet, but has since gone on sale and is $400 cheaper.

Contacted the customer support, they stated in nice terms "too bad so sad". Restocking fee is 30% which is about $200 more than the $400.

Anything anyone suggests I do or just wear it?

  • Did you pay with a price protection enabled credit card?

    • unfortunately no, I only have a debit card.

    Reject at delivery.

    • How do you do this if delivered to your house & left without signature ?

      • +14

        Move house.

A bit extreme, yes, but it's an option to consider…

        • lol ….. I'm gonna call you 'Stan' - my #1 fan ;)

        • lol jv does it again!

  • Anything anyone suggests I do or just wear it?

What do you really think the answer is…. :)

    • wear it, but people have come up with better solutions in the past.

call them back see if you get someone different in customer support…

Thought experiment: if they had put the price up by $400 the week after you ordered and called you up and asked you for $400 more, would you have paid it to them, or would you have insisted the price you clicked on the website was the "agreed" price?

    • -4

Honestly, if the choice was them not shipping and refunding the item, or me paying $400 more, then yes I would pay it as theres no other options for the item i purchased. Isnt this what the building companies have been doing?

      • +4

Building companies have it built into their agreement that prices can change (because building projects take a lot of time, material costs can change etc).

Apples and oranges with a "click here on this website to order this widget for $X".

This sort of argument is only valid if the OP had already received the item. If the item hasn’t even shipped yet then I reckon they should be able to cancel with no penalty and repurchase for whatever price it is.

      • +2

No, the correct answer is "they'll be bound by the terms and conditions that they agreed to when they clicked the "purchase" button".

If they agreed to a "re-stocking fee of 30% for cancelling an order" then they've got a 30% re-stocking fee that'll be deducted from their refund.

        • +1

I agree. Anyway, the OP was happy with the price they paid at the time of purchase so they should live with it. Checking prices after you buy something rarely makes you feel better.

        • +1

I’m not trying to argue the legalities or merits of OP’s contract of sale. I’m simply stating my opinion that this business are (profanity) for not cancelling an order that hasn’t shipped without penalty.

            @jaejae69: Fair enough.

My opinion is adults on both sides should stick to their agreements (from the business' perspective: they've unloaded the object from the warehouse stock and packed it and now are being told to pop it back on the racking again, for free, or alternately take a % hit on what their original sale price was).

I'm not saying I'd be happy paying the restocking charge myself, but I wouldn't call them (profanity) for charging it. Warehouse staff deserve to be paid, etc. "Changing your mind" tax exists for reasons like this.

    Won't Lower Price

    Why should they?

    The item is already sold….

  • +1

What if their supplier significantly reduced the price and that's why it's now cheaper for them to sell?

That would also mean item you bought cost them a lot more at the time, so if they sold it to you at a lower price, they'd be losing money.

    • I bought direct from the supplier, so highly doubt thats the case.

What if the manufacturer significantly reduced the price and that's why it's now cheaper for them to sell? :)

(Imagine losing $5,300 if you bought this one day too early.

Buy a second one to dollar cost average

    • +1

Better yet, 2 more. Average cost is even lower.

  • What is the item?

    • Not relevant to the discussion. OP don't tell Ash-Say

  • Call up and speak to the manager/owner of the store.

Hopefully they will agree which is reasonable.

If not, then unfortunately you'll have to wear it.

  • Name and shame them for sure btw, if they aren't smart enough to do the right thing, make that money they take from you cost them in the long run.

But give them another shot, try escalating it, review ACL but I think if it's a change of mind 'some' restocking fee is allowed.

I'm not doubting the legality of denying a refund of the difference (especially when it still hasnt shipped yet). It would be different if i had the product already.

Agree I think its reasonable to name and shame though.

    • OP agreed to the price at the time of completing their purchase online. The store has no obligation to cancel the transaction to sell to OP at the lower price.

  • Bought a well known brand washing machine online advertised at $nnnn, rrp $$$$, and saving $$$. Bought the item at $nnnn, now after one week same vendor advertising at $nnnn - $200, with same rrp.
Now some other vendor is selling around $250 cheaper than this vendor is advertising now. Bought with Amex. Any remedy available.
