If you are lucky, you can pick up a Simoco SRM9000-TU or SRM9000-UW for less off eBay. A bit more involved setting them up requiring manually programming them using RADARC but you get a robust commercial grade UHF with a remote mounting transmitter unit.

I have my unit up in the overhead console, with the handheld mic coming through the dash.

I understand 2nd hand commercial radios are not for everyone, and GME do make a good quality unit. Food for thought.

I have mates with Simoco's and mates with various GME units, and all are fantastic.

GME is made in Australia as well, if you care about that.

  I work in the industry and GME are a great unit. Being Made in Australia is a marketing tactic. Most of their product is made overseas. The units made here are produced and shipped from asia unassembled.
  It doesn't take away from the quality of the product. They just stretch the definition of the word made.

Depending on the terrain I get a few kms along the beach with a similar set up, I use the 4704B whip but same DBI range
