Has anyone use this type of peripheral before?

    • -1

What do you want to know?

      • +22

They want to know if anyone has used this type of peripheral before.

      • Does the passthrough charging deliver 65w?
I bought a different one that claimed 100w but it won't even do 65 to charge my laptop.

      • Just want to know, what are your thoughts, how reliable it is if I stick my ssd in them.

        • -1

Shouldn't be an issue like any other enclosure.

    • Yep. my SP4 died a few years ago and I was able to stick its SSD in this, and my SP6 was able to read it.

  • +10

Why are all all these accessories 4k @ 30hz. I get cost.. but if this is mainly used for office (vs linking to a TV) you need at lease 60hz or its jerky vision!

    • +1

Agreed. Sacrifice those additional USB-A ports to save the bandwidth, bump it to @ 60Hz and add LAN network (preferably more than 1gbe which feels dated now, go to 2.5gbe).

      • +3

Not many people need 2.5gbe I don't think. 60hz certainly useful though.

    • +6

I don't get why 4K is such a big deal in an office environment. For me personally 4K makes everything way too small. 2K or 2.5K@60Hz is where it's at

Up your budget and this Hagibis will get you 4K@60Hz.

      • +10

there is a DPI scale setting in Windows FYI.

        • Indeed there is. Certainly better now than it used to be. I just don't run 4K monitors excluding that Alienware we all got, but that's not used with a laptop.

          • +2

@Clear: 4K on a 40+ inch screen is great for productivity. It's basically like having four FHD monitors.

            • @macrocephalic: Yep, use a Dell 43" for work and it's great for coding on.

              • @flagger: I run a 4k 50" TV. The picture quality isn't very good (I didn't pick a good TV) but the screen realestate is fantastic.

      • Thanks for the link to 4K/60. A dock like that with an iPad Pro can really replace a laptop for holiday. Just returned from an overseas trip. I had to bring different cables , adapters and card readers etc to copy photos videos from the camera and dji action and mini 3 pro to my tablet or an nvme.

      • Firstly, DPI scaling in windows has gone a long way. Secondly, I run dual 1440p 32" at work and dual 4k 32" at home, and the extra real-estate allowed on the 4k monitor is extremely helpful when it comes to Photoshop, etc. Definitely took a bit for my eyes to adjust to the DPI, but they have. I use a desktop at home 99% of the time, but I want a type C dock with dual 4k output so I can plug my laptop in if needed.

        • Hence why I've provided 2 alternatives in this deal already.

4K (& soon 8K) is the new standard. I don't waste resources with nonstandard devices.
3x 4K attached, 1 is 125% scaling on Dell 69cm & everything else (Galaxy S23U with 8K/30fps, until I get proper 8K camcorder, as what I record now/still in memory will perfectly fit future mainstream 8K monitors/TVs).
If it's too small there's geometry trick - get closer- 1/2 distance -> 4x area focus.

        I don't buy any Apple marketing tricks - less is more$ :(

        Is it @Clear? ;)

        • +6

          What's the question?

        • Yes on paper the S23U records 8K 30fps video, but it's mostly pointless for a few reasons:
          1. The sensor on the S23U uses "tetra cell" colour filter, which allows the sensor to easily combine adjacent pixels to form a larger pixel, which can reduce image noise and allow for higher frame rates. However, this comes at the cost of colour resolution, which is equivalent to a 12.5MP bayer sensor.
          2. The lens on phones are not great and cannot resolve very high resolutions. They are capable of around 20MP, which is not enough for 8K. (from my personal experience using the 64MP camera of S21)
          3. Motion blur becomes a very big issue when recording high resolution video. High frame rates and very short shutter speeds can be used to counter the motion blur, however this causes more noise (due to higher ISO) which reduces the resolution. Recording 8K at 30fps is good for only extremely still subjects, with very little camera movement. Otherwise your footage will be full of motion blur and there is no advantage to 8K, 4K 60fps is better in 90% of situations.
          4. You probably can't see in 8K, main benefit of it is for video editors to be able to zoom in on the video and still have 4K quality.
          5. Although 4K is around 8MP and 8K is around 33MP, it is possible to cram more detail into the footage than the megapixel numbers suggest, due to the bayer colour filter on camera sensors.

If you're still not convinced I'd advise you to go to a local camera shop and try out a demo camera that shoots 4K video and compare it to the 8K video from your phone. You might find that the 4K from the dedicated camera is more detailed even though it's only 4K.

If you still want a 8K camera / camcorder I would suggest the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K, which can do 8K 120fps. It doesn't use "tetra cell" quality reduction, supports good quality lenses, and has 120fps to reduce motion blur.

      • if ur 4k monitor is 32 inch, its better to the scale to 175% rather the recommended 150%, and if u want ur eyes to relax a bit more, just put the scale to 200%.

        • I know how scaling works. The first mistake is assuming I'm using a 4K monitor 😉

No ethernet port and no 60hz no deal

    • -1

      yep, deal breaker.

    • +2

Prices certainly go up for those. This Orico does 4K@60hz and LAN, while this Hagibis will do 4K@60Hz without the LAN.

For me using the Essager at 2K@60Hz is more than enough.

  • -3

allowing you to use it as portable storage.

Not really, yes you can carry it but this gadget is more like a dock station since the case is much bigger than the driver.

    • +1

It's not much bigger than any other USB-C hub so being able to insert a tiny M.2 SSD in the same sized hub is a big plus. Besides it's not some big chunky dock like this

      • -3

It's not much bigger than any other USB-C hub

It's a portable HUB or docking station which is much bigger than a standard M.2 NVMe's enclosure, but you are free to call it whatever you like.

        • +1

A USB hub that incorporates an M.2 enclosure is bigger than an M.2 enclosure that doesn't incorporate a hub. Who knew!

  • Is this brand reliable tho?? Never heard of them

    • 90% of the reviews on AliExpress are from Jun and Jul 2023. The photos look legit but I believe no one comment on the longevity.

  • Any of these hubs with lan work with chromecast?

    If only this had ethernet

  • 4k @ 30hz.. yuk..

  • no thunderbolt
