Domain Name Registration from TL ₺45 Per Year (~A$2.51, Price Varies with Domain Name) @ Google Domain via Turkey

1521

Good morning everyone!!
I don't think this will interest a lot of people. But there are savings to be made. Google Domain has been sold to Squarespace although the prices will remain the same for a year, expect to go up after that.

So if someone it's after a domain this method via Turkey it's cheap comparing to the AU prices.

I can give few examples. For ScroogeMcdeal domain and specifically for Scroogemcdeal.dev Scroogemcdeal.au it's A$18 each in Australia.
In Turkey it's TL75 each (~A$4.19) see here and here
Keep in mind you will need an ABN to register .au domain

NOTE: Prices vary depending on domain name and domain ending.

Guide How to Obtain Deal

The steps are pretty simple.

Step one
Add a Google payment profile for Turkey if you don't have one yet. If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile.

Step Two
How to manually update your billing location

Your location is determined at checkout by the home address you use with your Google Account to purchase or transfer a domain.

To manually set your billing country in Google Domains, follow these steps:
•Sign in to Google Domains.
•Open the menu Menu. (Three lines on the left)
•Click the flag next to the name of your current billing country.
•In the Change your country or region window that pops up, select your country from the dropdown list. (Here you need to select Turkey)
•Click Apply.

Step Three
Now you can search the domain name and domain ending that you want. Prices would be in Turkish Lira.

Info: You can buy up to 10 years of domain

I don't know much about domain. But I thought it would be useful to share this with the community.

You must be new here. Buy now, check if you need it later.

Fairly new. Started using Ozbargain 25/11/2021 but actively daily user since December 2022.

Gone are the days of cheap domains. Used to cost a dollar or sometimes free for a new domain, then less than $10 for renew.

Just renewed a .com domain few days ago, $135 for 5 years.

    • +18

Cloudflare provides at-cost domains and includes their basic protection features free.

      https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/products/registrar/

      • -1

Thanks, will look into their email routing feature.

My current registrar used to support email forwarding, so I setup a whole bunch of forwards to different Gmail mailboxes, it was really simple and free.

Then they migrated to O365, now have to pay for an O365 mailbox ($150 for 3 years) and go through a complicated process to create distribution lists in Exchange Admin just to forward emails to different Gmail mailboxes, and also lost the catchall function.

      • They don’t support .au as of yet unfortunately

      • This. Cloudflare is the best all-round domain registrar at the moment I reckon.

      • +1

What's the equivalent 5 year renewal price?

        • +1

USD $9.15 a year, including Cloudflare services, SSL and WHOIS domain privacy.

    • Oof. Still $10-12 most places. Where are you renewing?

      • GoDaddy.

It's no longer the same company started by Bob Parsons.

        • +1

godaddy has become gonedaddy for me. I got sick of trying to keep track of how much the next year was going to cost me and moved my domains to cloudflare

  • Had one but do I need use real address from Turkey? I put my address of AU and made the payment successfully but can never receive the verify email and now the domain has been suspended.

    • Some domain need you to verify the details within a few days/hours or it get locked then suspended. You'll have to contact whoever runs the domain not who sold it to you.

  • +3

This is well below registry-level cost so expect some cancellations.

  • +4

For reference, if anyone wants a legitimate domain name service without the risk of it being suspended or cancelled, I’ve been very happy with Porkbun. They usually have insane sales as well and have free Whois privacy.

    • +1

      +1 for Porkbun
      Cheaper then many others

Managed to get a .au domain for 5y for TRY375 (~20AUD). Thanks for posting!

    • +1

Glad I could help and save some $$ 🙂

    • Need an ABN with Google to get a .au domain
      Sadly I don’t have one

      • They are free. Though check how b this might affect your tax.

      • +1

For .au, you don't need an ABN.

You just need to be a citizen or permanent resident.

If Google requires it, definitely go elsewhere. There are cheaper .au domains anyways.

      • Just sign up for one. It's easy and free

      • Not true for .au released in 2022 - no ABN required unless you register it as a business. You can register as an individual without an ABN. .com.au etc. are a different story.

    • What payment method did you use? I tried Oldubil but it says it won't accept prepaid card and all Australian card has been declined.

      • I used my Turkish burner account, but also had issues using Oldubil. My Australian VISA did not work, but luckily my Australian AMEX did.

I then added my primary account as a shared owner of the domain.

  • +2

Google are selling this business I am pretty sure, just fyi in case anyone choosing this cares.

  • +3

For anyone unaware, Google has sold all Google Domains customer accounts to Squarespace and will be shutting down the service once the aquisition is complete later this year. Squarespace have said they'll honour Google renewal prices for at least the next 12 months.

    https://www.theregister.com/2023/06/18/google_domains_shutti…

    • Yes, I have put those details on the description. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • +11

Google was already more expensive than the competition and once you get used to Cloudflare free DNS management, it doesn't really matter what Registrar you use as all your domains are managed in your Cloudflare account.

Between various coupons, Porkbun, NameCheap, CheaperDomainsAU, etc, have pricing that is so much cheaper than Google it makes the Turkish workaround not worth it.

If you are looking for a .AU address, CheaperDomains has a -30% discount code; TLWWY3 which brings it down from A$16 to A$11.20, if you just want something cheaper, both Porkbun & NameCheap have domains like .XYZ for less than $2.

Whatever registrar you use, it takes only a few minutes to add the Cloudflare name servers, which isn't as daunting as it sounds, add the domain to your free cloudflare account, then you don't have to go back to your registrar unless you need to renew etc.

I recently got a .XYZ address for A$1.77 total from namecheap, added it to Short.io via cloudflare and I now have my own personal URL shortner that is 5 characters .xyz/ whatever I type, for a year before I have to renew for I think $7. For less than $2 I send my friends and family a short link with just my initials.

It would only be worth it if you paid upfront for say 5 years like some of the other commenters have mentioned, I might consider that as I already have a Turkish payment setup with YouTube Premium.

Edit: I had just made the assumption that this required the VPN like usual, but if it doesn't, it may be more worthwhile than I had anticipated.

    • +1

I think it depends on what domain
just searched on .net and it only cost 75TL in google (A $4), while it cost A$16 to A$25 in the site you have listed

Besides, there are many domain sellers offer special discount which only applies to first year
renewal will revert back to normal price
assuming google domain price remain unchange
its a much cheaper option for ongoing domain renewals

    • For .au, Micron21 is still under $9.

      • How can we get domains from Micron21 without an ABN though?

        • You don't need one for .au. Their UI can be a bit tricky to get through (e.g. it currently forces you to enter a business name… just enter your name), but it's doable.

  • -4

Side topic, anyone know how to get the cheapest google nest security subscription?

  • +2

Pretty messed up that a domain name costs different based on the location of the buyer lol.

Subscriptions services are bad enough doing this, but at least they have some reasons such as their contracts with studios and such.

What excuse do they have for charging different for a domain name lmao. It’s a global service.

    • +1

I can't say whats a fair price for this type of essential service, but normally regional pricing is fair in that its more of a discount based on local affordability.

Hard to say how much is fair as we don't know the real cost of operation, but my opinion is that every country should allocate one free domain per citizen under their TLD.

    • Your expectation has two issues:
They set a global price to cover costs + a bit of profit, which cuts out any opportunities for poorer countries.
      or
They set a global price to match the cheapest countries prices (e.g. Turkey) and then can't afford keep running as a business.

Regional pricing is an accessibility/affordability thing, like Jim said.
Also, different countries have different running costs, taxes etc.

      • -1

I don’t see that as “two issues” I see that as “two more ethical solutions.”

Only your implications about how it might function are non-sense. These services are not that so expensive to run that they’re “unprofitable” at international rates. They’re simply extorting anyone at local rates because they know local markets are cashed up and loose with their credit card.

And if they alternatively went for option 2 and just put global average prices and Türkiye couldn’t afford to purchase anymore: well …so be it. Big deal. They’ll use another domain name service. It’s not a serious issue of accessibility lol.

        You’re justifying market extortion.

    • The wholesale price of domain names is actually fixed (around $9 USD) for every country. The only reason you see this regional difference is because google hasn’t updated prices while the Turkish lira has become devalued.

This is not a sustainable price and will change when they get sick of losing money on each sale.

      • Do you think Google will honour the price?

    • +1

People just stopped getting outraged at digital goods costing different at different locations. Digital is the true global price equalizer and only parasitic bureaucracies stop it from performing like one.

  • oh no I don't have ABN to register .au domain

    • You don't need one.

To register a .au domain name you must have an Australian presence, which includes being a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or being an organisation registered in Australia.

The full definition of an Australian presence can be found at Section 1.4 of the .au Licensing Rules.

Each type of .au domain name (namespace) also has a specific purpose and additional rules about who can register it. For example, the com.au and net.au namespaces can only be used by registered commercial entities and the org.au namespace can only be used by registered not-for-profit organisations.

The full list of namespace requirements can be found in the .au Licensing Rules.

      Source

      • Yes but you need one to register with Google
        From Google support:

The .au registry, AuDA, permits both Australian citizens and businesses to purchase .au domains. However, the validation policies are very different for registrars like Google Domains.
1:52:16 AM Justin: Registries and registrar are separate entities, it is at a registrar's discretion which of these entity types they wish to support. Google Domains has chosen to support only business entity registration of .au domains at this time which is why we require a Australian business ID.
1:52:22 AM Justin: . This is in alignment with the validation policies imposed on .com.au domains, which Google Domains also supports.

        • Ahk, apologies.
I went with VentraIP and didn't have any issues.
          5 years for $43.35.

    Is www.x.tr taken?

  • Thanks. Need to try a different vpn. My PureVPN doesn’t like Turkey anymore. Points to Russia.
Already using that Google with Turkish payment method for Google play and working there. Any suggestions which to use?

    • you do not need vpn.

      • Hm, might just read instructions again. Arghh.
        Thanks.

        • My bad. Changed country. All good. Thanks again.

  • i mean we are talking about $18 per year if you can't afford that then maybe you should not have a domin

    • And I won't risk a .com.au domain.

  • +2

This is cheaper in the long run.

    .com domain Google Domains Cloudflare
    Price per Year TRY195 / A$10.86 USD9.15 / A$13.73
    Cost in 10 Years TRY1950 / A$108.60 USD91.50 / A$137.30
    Total A$108.60 A$137.30
    Total Savings A$28.70
    • as if it can last 10 years as mentioned the price might change after handovers and also considered the risk of being banned.

      • +1

It doesn't matter if the price changed after you pay for 10 years, as the next payment will be when the domain near expiry 10 years later, that's like in 2033.

After you pay, wait 60 days for the cool off period and transfer it out to other provider, if you're that paranoid, and your next expiry will be in 2034.

ICANN only focus on the domain details, which you can use your real address, and these are protected by whois privacy now anyway. They don't care about the payment stuff, it's not their turf.

        • Shouldn't be much cheaper when you pay for years upfront? and in case things go wrong later who will you contact after you transfer out?

          • +1

@Bii: That's the point, pay for 10 yrs upfront and save $$$, after 60 days, transfer out to a new registrar. Along the 10 years period, the price might go up again (happened recently).

You rarely need to "contact" the registrar unless for billing purposes. The only important thing that you need to have after you purchase the domain are access to the control panel (to unlock the domain, set name server, etc.) and the EPP/Auth code (to transfer out). Even if you're "banned", you would probably just be told to take your domain away from them (transfer out).

I can't imagine they would be bothered to waste their time with such fake location thingy, you're paying the real price that they offered anyway. It's not like you're running some scam/illegal sites that they have to ban you out of nowhere.

            • @r0xz: Can you update the address to an Australian address afterwards?

              • @ozcbr777777: I haven't tried but pretty sure you can. It's your google account, has nothing to do with google domains

  • +6

Registering a domain name with a fake address just seems dumb. It’s basically opening yourself up to having it taken by someone else when they discover you used fake details for the registration. To save $10 AUD this isn’t worth the risk.

    Just use cloudflare.

    • This.
Registering a domain and working hard to build the ranking and just risk it being taken away is simply not worth it. Remember, you don't own the domain, you are just renting it.

  • If I just renewed the domain does the old expiry carries over when I transfer it to Google Domain?

    • it will add another year on top of your current expiry. you can transfer out again from Google Domains to a new registrar after 60 days cooling off period per ICANN's policy.

  • Anyone know if we can buy Squarespace subscription from Turkey for cheap? Need to build a website.

  • Followed the steps added a payment and account address in turky but price is TRY195.
Btw, this is to register a new domain and price is not discounted.

    • It depends on the domain name and domain ending that you are after. It's much cheaper than AU prices.

      • I tried .com and also tried .au and still 195, there are some domain providers in Australia that charge 9.95 for all domains per year and you can register up to 10 years, but of course 2.95 is a deal if it works.
I even asked a friend living in turkey to try and it is showing TR195.

        Cheers

  • .de are the cheapest domains at TL45 - very good price thanks OP!

Can i get my customized domain email service without paying Google Workspace ? Forwarding is for free but I would like to be able to send emails via [email protected]

  • +2

Just an update, I've successfully transferred, renew, and bought new .net domains, all for the max years allowed.

    Provider (.net) Price /yr Price /yr (A$) Price 10yr Price 10yr (A$) Savings /yr Savings /10yr
    Cloudflare US$10.10 A$15.41 US$101.00 A$154.10 - -
    Google Domains TRY75 A$4.24 TRY750 A$42.40 A$11.17 A$111.70

This is for 1 domain, and I have 4.

    • Good savings!! 👍👍

    • Did you renew domain multi years immediately after it's transferred to google?
I have trouble renewing domain at max 10 years. It says payment declined while i can transfer another domain and pay with same wise card saved in Google pay.

      • +1

Yes. No issue for me. I used revolut, wise, and cba cards.

        • I tried renewing less than max 10 years then it worked. Not sure what the problem is with Google domain.

          • @kctt: Yes, some extensions they're not letting be renewed for the total of 10 years but you can take the maximum to 9. Personally, going to the full maximum of 10 is complicated as it makes a transfer out more difficult or you just lose money.

  • I just finished transferring my domain to Google today. For au domains, it doesn’t allow any extra year of renewing (could be auDA policy). For other LTD, it allows a maximum of 10 years of renewal.

One thing to be careful of is, google will ask the new owner to verify from email. So if you are using your Google Workspace as the account on the domain that you are transferring, you may not be able to access the verification email if the MX record wasn’t set up correctly in the new DNS setup.

  • How is the control panel with Google Domains?
Is it cPanel or their own?

  • Good to use for unlimited emails etc.. lol

  • My payment went pending and all the following attempts were unsuccessful with declined payment methods

    • What card? I used revolute without issues

      • I used HSBC, NAB and Revolut, all got declined. I did put the address in Turkey, the payment currency in TRY, maybe my account got flagged somehow as to register "com.au" I had to provide an ABN (I have one) and some contact details

  • Anyone know what happens when squarespace takes over? Will they honor the already paid 10 year domain paid?

    • +1

Yes, because it's already paid for.

      • Nice!!! Buy up as many domains as you can then!!

      • do you know when squarespace will take it over?

        • Later in the year, once it clears regulatory hurdles. Hopefully just long enough to pass through the 60 day lockout period so I can transfer out.

          https://newsroom.squarespace.com/blog/googledomains

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023, and is subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

I expect that things will get moved around mid October, provided the transaction clears during the expected time frame.

  • Just curious, is this the best price or it might have a discount on special days like Black Friday. Cheers
