Connect to VPN from Hotel without Installing Software?

I'm looking for a way to connect my work laptop to VPN from a hotel.
Problem is I can't install VPN software or make any changes to settings on my laptop eventhough I've got a NordVPN subscription.

The only thing I can think of is to connect to VPN on my mobile and then tether… problem then would be the amount of data used.

Any suggestions?

You should be able to set it up on a router. Just grab a cheap travel sized one that can run custom FW, from Amazon or similar.

    • IMHO, you can't go wrong with these little GL.iNet travel routers.

I have an early model Slate that was still going strong when I eventually gave in to temptation - an ozbargain, of course - and upgraded to the Slate AX.

Can’t you just set up a vpn connection in windows networking settings?

Use the built-in VPN settings on windows, takes a little bit to set up though.

I've done this with a travel router and Mullvad VPN. Configure the router with VPN settings and just connect to the router wifi as normal.

For reference I use one of the GL.iNet ones

    • Do you just plug these into the ethernet port in the hotels?

      • You probably could. I usually just go into the router config and connect to their wifi which works well most of the time.

        • Oh so this unit can connect to Wifi and then relay the signal? How does it work with those captive prompts asking you to sign in?

          • @Johnsmithaus: what's worked for me previously was connecting to the private wifi that the travel router creates on whatever device. Then on that device i navigate to http://neverssl.com/ to force it to redirect to the hotels captive portal.

  • Would something like this work? https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1073903063…
Suggling to find GL.iNet that can be delivered / pick up by Wednesday next wek.

That's not going to work. A tethered connection won't use the VPN on your mobile, at least for a Google Pixel.

    • I can confirm VPN won't work tethered on Apple too.

      • That's annoying… Just tried it and connected to VPN on iPhone and on iPhone IP shows UK correctly, but on connected Macbook it still shows AUS :(
