Transport for NSW - Traineeships

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd post this if anyone is looking for a new career change or maybe their first career. I work for Transport for NSW, but don't have anything to do with recruitment. For some reason i hear they struggle to get applicants, for what i think is a really good job.

These jobs pay for your study - pay you to attend, put you in accommodation, and pay for your travel to attend (if you don't live close). I went through the road design program a few years ago and would highly recommend. One on one training, moving you around to other workgroups to learn about what they do.

Pay starts around $45k for a trainee and goes up every year. Once you finish its really easy to move around in the organisation and get other jobs.

Electrical Designer Engineer In Training - Traineeships 2024 - Sydney

Road Designer In Training - Traineeships 2024 - Sydney and Regional NSW

Traffic Engineering Officer in Training - Traineeships 2024 - Sydney

After you apply you can attend a Virtual Information Session on Thursday 24 August 2023.

Applications close 22nd August

  • …or maybe they're first career…

    Classic.

    • Hahahaha thanks, I hope that's all

45k? don't you get paid more then that not working and being on centrelink?

    • +1

JobSeeker singles, no kids, $693.10 a fortnight, 52 weeks in a year, total $18,020.60 per annum. A job seeker can access Health Care Card benefits but still far off $45k.

    • It's like an apprenticeship. You get paid to learn a skill and don't come out the end with a debt.

      It's a pretty sweet deal.

When I did my apprenticeship 1st year wages were not much better than the dole (I worked 2 other part time jobs to stay afloat. 2nd year I got a 50% wage rise; 3rd year another 50%. 4th year was only slightly less than the award wage for a tradie.

IIRC, Centrelink for a single person is $18kpa

      • that's pretty good then in the long term if you stay. i don't think that skill would transfer, it is pretty specific to trains?
whats the roster like, does it have crazy hours since the train runs pretty much non stop?

        • I don't work for railways but the Illawarra line is 50m from my back door. I believe the trains stop running 2.00am-5.00am? I doubt anyone doing design would be doing graveyard shift.

          Engineering skills are very transferable.
I trained as a motor mechanic mainly doing brakes, clutches and suspension.
I went to night school (took me 7 years) and got an Associate Diploma in Mech Eng. I then went into aircraft "stuff" at Qantas Engineering and had 4 very different jobs over 17 years. Then went into bulk water storage and transport (dams, pumping stations and pipelines) and had 3 very different roles over 13 years.
I "retired" last year and now use my design and fabrication skills to make the frames for 2 metre high dinosaur puppets that tour the world putting on shows.
I'd encourage anyone to do a trade or get into engineering (mech, elec, civil, robotics). The work has a lot more pathways than people realise and the pay is pretty good.

    • I think you may be missing the point.

  • Thanks for sharing. These could be useful for some.

You have a flare for reading

I see that to do these jobs the job description says you need to have to have a "flare for reading, writing and learning". Presumably to you aren't kept in the dark. and can see what you are reading, writing and learning. I would have thought they'd want people with a FLAIR for reading, writing and learning. You don't have to be very smart to simply find the light switch.

  • Hi, I just received two emails from TfNSW, one is for a practice video interview, one is for Testgrid. Are both of them parts of the recruitment process? thanks for help.

    • +1

Not sure what the test video interview is, but the Testgrid is a psychometric test so part of the recruitment test. Hope it goes well for you!! What did you apply for?

      • Thx, I have applied for Electrician Steam. Actually, the practice video interview is listed in the handbook of the recruitment. so I am surprised when I was asked to a psychometric test. May I use a calculator during the test, I heard the numerical test is hard?
