Woolworths Accepting Debit Credit Cards Again

Original Article: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/09/woolworths-accepting-de…

I swore black and blue that I'd never shop at Woolworths again when they introduced this. I'm not sure what happened but now I refuse to shop at Coles?! 0_o Actually I avoid the big 2 like the plague when possible and shop at Aldi!

Anyhow, a point would be good. It seems shortly after this the banks started to drop the tight EFTPOS fees of old and now for example, I don't even know if my current NAB account even has any EFTPOS fees or limits.

Another quick comment to round off a disjointed post. Australia still seems so cash-centric compared to NZ. I remember living in NZ and keeping a little loose change for the bus but other then that never really using cash. 30 cent stamp at the post office, no issue, on the card. Poor merchants in Australia seem to get slammed for banking systems. Don't even get me started on Australia's NFC infrastructure!

Anyhow…. that's my awkward 2am ranty, can't get to sleep in bed thing is now over.

Yeah almost as bad as the tautologies like PIN number.

  • The problem is not many people get to see these charges from the business side. My last merchant facility cost $0.16 for an EFTPOS transaction and 0.37% for debit card transactions. They would be less for Woolies I would assume.

This means the charge to my business for debit cards is uncapped and if you're spending more than $43 the cost of the transaction is more. Debit cards and their fee structure is just a ploy from Visa/MC to extract more fees out of merchants which is disappointing in the increasingly cashless business environment.

  • well with the proliferation of prepaid visa gift cards they would be turning away a fair bit of revenue wouldn't they?
