Drone Upgrade - Currently Have Phantom 3 Standard

Hi OzB

I don't post on here as often as I should, and I'm shamelessly copying my WP post to see if I can get some advice on here…

I currently have Phantom 3 standard, which has been great but the range limitations and overall size of it can be a bit frustrating… I'm no professional user, and mainly fly for fun or to capture family moments.

I hadn't been thinking about upgrading, but a Mavic Pro has come up nearby for a pretty resonable price and it got me looking into it, the Mavic Pro looks like a pretty good upgrade from what I have now, and if the seller had replied to me over the weekend, I may have ended up picking it up, although his lack of response and the missing phone cables worry me that I won't be able to test it fully.

So that got me looking at other options in my price range (under $600) and I have since found a few more options that might work, but between all the specs I keep forgetting what has what..

The options I have found are:

Mavic Pro (Refurb Fly More Combo) $599 or used from $350-$600
Mavic Mini (Offical Refurb) $345
Mavic Air Fly More Combo $450 (used - possibly negotiable)
Mini 3 (DJI Store Refurb – $599 - not in stock currently but may come back) (also at JB for $674)
Mini 2 SE (Brand new) $549

Pretty sure the camera on all of these offer me an upgrade from what I have now, so that's not an issue, I mainly want to be able to go more than a few hundred metres before video signal becomes patchy and have something I can easily take to the park or somewhere else without having to preplan to take my giant drone backpack, get it out, mount the props etc.

The only reason I didn't just grab the Mini 2 SE straight up as it's the only one that doesn't have any collision avoidance, it's not something I have now, but not having it has made me worried about using the automated tracking options as I don't want to fly into a tree etc.

Someone on WP just replied about the Mavic Pro having mapping issues, but I haven't found any info in my quick searching (but haven't looked in depth either)

Any thoughts?

  • Mini 2/3 is fine for what you need and have great range on them.

    (Better off with a 2 then a 2se)

They are under the 250gram limit so you don’t have any hoops to jump through setting it up.

They don’t have obstacle avoidance, but If you’ve managed to not crash yet you will be fine. (+ you shouldn’t ever bank on that to save you, it’s only a safety net)
Active track etc can be done from 3rd party apps.

    • Thanks

Any reason you suggest avoiding the SE? - It's $125 cheaper than the 3, but I can justify it if it's worth the extra…

      • +1

A mini 2se is basically the same thing as a mini 2 with only 2.4k camera.

As opposed to the 4k camera in the mini 2.
        Or just get a mini 3 🤷🏽‍♂️

        • Got it - thanks, have been looking at so many specs between models its all becoming a blur…

  • Mini 3. You'll appreciate the upgrade in range, quality, portability, etc.

Get the latest gen you can. They've made advances each year that don't look that large on paper but make a big difference in every day use (eg no flyaways and such).

  • Have to head in to town later so going to pop into JB.. is it worth waiting and saving the extra to get the M3P?

Hoping I can get maybe $200 for my P3 to help offset the cost

    • M3p if you want active track and (i think some obstacle avoidance)

    • Only $200 for P3. What's wrong with it? Is battery dead?

      • Nothing wrong with it all, I sold it for $250 in the end, looking at Marketplace near me, it seemed reasonable for a quick sale, there were better options pushing into the $300-$400 price range

I decided in the end to get the Mini 3 Pro and am loving it so far, now I just need to find some more areas to fly in Hobart
