Is It Safe to Use This Firepit?

Hello everyone,

I bought this firepit in Bunnings last year.

Unfortunately it's all rust in the middle now so i'm wondering whether if it's safe to use and cook (it comes with a cooking grill)? I can't be bothered cleaning off the rust.

If not, can you recommend me another under $200 one that doesn't rust quickly and have a grill plate attachment?

Thanks

It's fine. That's just what happens.

    • Are you sure? There's so many conflicting articles on Google and I don't know what to do now.

Does google really have answers saying don’t use a rusty fire pit?

      • No, I'm not sure now. You have me second guessing myself. I just read all the conflicting articles on Google. My Brian hurts. Just bin it my friend to be on the safe side.

          Your poor Brian

        • Why? Tell us the gory details!

I can't imagine it'd be bad for you.. May taste odd, but scape the bulk off first and get it nice and hot, surely it'd be ok.

If you want to get a few more winters out of it, get a cheap pizza stone or paella pan to line the base.

I actually use an old steel washing machine drum that I picked up at the dump.
Free, works a charm and is recycling.

I didn't paint mine or add legs. I just sit it on some bricks
If you don't have a chance to go the dump you might have a local unconsumers group on Facebook.

It’s fine. Not recommended to be cook directly on a surface that has been painted and now rusting because you’ll get rust flakes in your food. If the cooking surface is rusty give it a stiff wire brush to remove all the loose rust and then oil it up good.

  • The rust is in the pit, where your coals / wood goes. I don't see the problem?
That is not the cooking surface. Look at the Bunnings photos to see how to use it.
If you are worried about the rust coming into contact with the coals / wood, then I think you have bigger concerns…

    • When the rust gives way, embers may fall through onto the ground/surface below. It's not unheard of for people to put firepits on wooden decking…

  • The stainless steel grill plate is clean because it’s very easy to clean off with BBQ wipes.

I’m just concerned but everyone says as long as you don’t throw the sausages and patties on the bottom then i’m fine.

    Thanks all!

  • Best not to use it indoors, on a wooden deck or on dry grass
