Security Camera Options That Does Not Require Stable Internet

Looking for a cheap as possible security camera where I can install an outdoor camera and have the recording stored indoor without having to use the internet (currently just using mobile hotspot at home).

Im guessing a wired system would be the solution.
Only need 1 camera but option to add more would be useful.

Unfortunately not the most technology savvy (decent with my hands so physically installing a system is no issue) but have been reading up on DVR/NVR systems and really confused.

Appears the cameras seem to be cheap but the recorders (weather dvr or nvr) seem to be quiet pricey.
Could the recorders be purchased separately? eg TP link NVR with Reolink camera? or is that a big no

Any recommendations on systems or any other way of having a camera without great access to internet (no issue with internet in setting up the system).

Did speak to someone at Jaycar who pushed their own brand and then Swann system. Said could have wireless systems with a central hub that wouldnt internet but that was over 1k. So trying to stay well under that if possible

  • Get a tplink vigi cam + their nvr. You can’t get simpler than that. Or reolink but they are bit more pricy.

This is a simple explanation, pm me if you want specific help :)

    • Have read through here and heard good things about Reolink.

Cameras dont seem to expensive (well on sale and maybe because im only after one and not 8 etc)
But the NVRs seem pretty expensive.
Is it possible to use the Reolink camera with TPlink NVR?

      Thanks

      • haven't tested but you should be able to as long as the cams support the ONVIF standard.

  • Example of a cheap PVR:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Security-Standalone-Output-Remote-…
    $99, add your own HDD.

Works with coax old-style analog-HD, TVI, etc, as well as IP cameras.

  • Mid-range option: 4G camera with cloud recording (e.g. Arlo Go 2). Consumes up to 2GB mobile data per month plus $48 per year cloud subscription.

    • Possible but the mobile hotspot aint that great.
Had a kmart version without cloud and wifi wasnt stable. Had to reconnect every couple of hours

      • This option doesn't rely on your hotspot, it has its own sim - you could get a 365d pre-paid. I agree, using a hotspot for wifi is a solid low-cost option. I've been installing used Optus NBN routers that have 4G fallover - for seniors who don't use much data.

        • I will have a look into it
The idea of adding cloud subscription and another sim doesnt sound too appealing but do have another circumstance in the future where i will need a wireless system for a few months and this might be a better option

          thanks

Install a single Wyze camera and bang a microSD card into it. You don't need a centralised recorder.

For multiple cameras, you configure them individually via a wifi hotspot, and can view multiple via phone app (during which time you do need to provide internet access or pull the SD cards)

They are incredibly easy to set up.

    • Easy to setup
Easy for the entire system to be pulled out along with the the sd card as it needs to be accessible to recharge (if not using solar) or to retrieve sd cards
