[Resolved] Allowing certain overseas users to contact users via Private Messages

So, a while back I was conversing with the man himself, Scotty, regarding a website. During the conversation I moved overseas, back to NZ from Aus (Since which I have actually found a job, which is where I am writing this from! The ironic thing is, we deal predominately with Aussies!). So I attempted to reply to Scotty with whatever I thought relevant at the time (A little while a go) but was unable to as I was now overseas.

Could there be some sort of request based system put in place where users can request the ability to messages others from an overseas location?

I am aware that automatically allowing this based on, say, having logged in from an Australian IP once would be open to abuse via VPN or proxy, so that is why I have suggested a request based system.

I don't imagine there being a large amount of users requesting this feature, but there have been cases where I personally have attempted to message someone else but have been denied, could also come in handy for genuine overseas users who have a need to message someone else regarding the website or deals, the only other option is publicly displaying your email address or other personal information.

Thanks,

Shaw.

  • Congrats on the job shaw.

Any moderator can bypass the restriction on private messaging. You can start a Talk with a Moderator forum thread ,contact OzBargain directly to have it set, or any other way of getting our attention.

    • Cheers mate, thanks!

I was aware of these methods of contacting mods or admins, but is there anyway to contact a user directly other than posting the information (Which you want to tell them) or private details (Email address/phone number etc) on a public forum or deal?

      • Hi shaw, do you mind clarifying what you want to do? At the moment, you can send a private message to anyone that has private messaging enabled.

Edit: If a user is logging in from an overseas IP, by default they cannot send private messages. However, they can ask moderators to set a flag on their account so that this restriction is lifted. That's the flag that Neil is talking about above.

        • Ok, so the system is already in place? Thanks for clearing that up, neil didn't delve very far into it is all.

Can I request that and consider this thread obsolete?

        • The flag has been set on your account.

        • Cheers mate, thank you.

  • hi is it possible to do the same for me? I will send you a message,

I've been a member for like 10 years and often travel overseas, it is super annoying when in the middle of a conversation and had to setup a few things to bypass it which was slow and tedius

    Thanks :)

    • Hi there,

Please contact us by TWAM and we'll get that done for you.

      Thanks
