Smart Meter Noise

My parents had a smart meter installed recently & have noticed 'clicking' noises (3-4 clicks each time) that occurs randomly throughout the day. The best way I can describe it is like a very loud 'seconds' hand on a clock.

For those that have a smart meter, is this noise typical?

Are you sure it is the smart meter that is clicking and not just assuming it is because that was the most recent change?

Do they have any controlled loads? ie Elec Hot Water?

Generally they shouldn't be clicking, so report it as faulty and ask for it to be replaced. Clicking if normally relays inside changing state, ie controlled loads turning on and off.

    • They do have controlled load for the electric hot water & this turns on/off late at night and is not the same type of noise.

The smart meter was actually serviced soon after installation as the electricity provider advised that it wasn't transmitting (?) properly although there were no issues with electricity within the house.

      Thanks - I'll give them a call.

Not transmitting is normally the meter isn't sending data back, so either out of range or broken. They'll continue to work even if this is the case.

Give them a call and ask for it to be replaced as its making clicking sounds.

    no

  • Insomnia, headaches, and other electro magnetic radiation illness were normal when they were first rolled out. Never hear about it anymore, similar to the 5g nutters now.

    • I understand that smart meters are safe. Not so sure about 5G or the earlier Gs …. heaps of folks now want 'dumb' mobiles.

I have a smart meter and it clicks consistently once about every 10 seconds, probably comparable to a ticking clock in respect to volume (but is outside so it doesn’t bother me). The ticking sound coincides with the lcd screen changing (alternating/cycling through various displays… I have no idea what they mean). My electricity is flat rate (flat rate cents per kWh).

    • hmmm …. the smart meter noise can be heard from inside & it's quite loud & can be heard even when the TV (which is on the other side of the same wall) is on. The noise occurs ~ 4-5 times a day.

I'll call tomorrow & hear what they have to say.
