Video Camera

Some relatives are having their 1st baby and given our experience we thought we would buy them a video camera as a present.

I'm not up on the latest features etc and neither are they. We would want a camcorder with onboard memory, not just an SD Card. Budget is probably $200 ish maybe a bit more if needed. I've seen the little bloggie type things that look like an iPod with a small LCD screen, probably not after one of those, more interested in the traditional video camera setup. Also not interested in a regular camera capable of taking video, they probably already have one of those!

Any suggestions/leads much appreciated.

A relative of mine got a video camera as a present as well for the same occasion. Ended up not using it and going on eBay because their iPhone 4 and Galaxy S2 already did the same job at capturing video at a reasonable quality.

IMO, video camera's make cliched presents and even though all parents like to take baby pictures, the novelty wears off after a while and the camera ends up getting stored into the closet 99% of the time. Its simply not that 'useful' in the long run.

My advice is not to get the camera but instead get baby related stuff. Example:

    • I probably agree with you but this is the father in law's idea and my wife and mother in law hare over the moon with what a great idea it is. Personally I'm happy to just foot the bill, anything for an easy life!! Our kids are teenagers now so I am out of date withe the latest in Baby Couture!!

    • I used to think the phone was more than enough to take casual videos…until I brought my Samsung S2 with me for a overseas trip, absolutely horrible videos, completely wasted the opportunities. I swear my 10 year old 480p camera takes better quality video.

If I had to get one now, I'd get something like this:

Reckon it'll be easy to get it for ~$300 on sale.

I mean yes, the sheer convenience of a phone will mean the video camera will stay in storage a lot more often, but for the moments that count, it's worth it.

    • Lol at the noise cancelling earphones at number 3 on the gifts list.

    • Scrimshaw is right. I have a baby on the way. What new parents need is lots of boxes of Huggies nappies. The suggestion is to spend your $200 on a selection of sizes. You will burn through about 10 nappies a day.

By now most parents would be using their iPhones, the video feature on their digital camera or have a decent video camera already to capture the baby's first smiles. However if you are looking at a good brand of video camera that probably won't end up in the cupboard, look at JVC. Their prices have been dropping and the quality improving over the last couple of years.
