What to Buy While I'm in America?

Hey guys,

After recent visa and esta issues, I finally made it in America, Chicago city to be precise.

Can you please recommend things to buy here that are expensive or hard to fine in Australia. I will be here for the next 3weeks.

Off topic if you all think life in Australia is hard, try living here, cost of living is crazy expensive. Their healthcare system is really bad. We have easy going life in Australia.

    • I agree with you 100% Living standard in the US is shockingly awful.

      • Yeah he recently send me a video which is a normal street walking video, in it I see so many homeless people on the street it's heart breaking.

Considering how rich the America as a country, I am shocked to see that much homeless in the downtown CBD. He lives in LA

      • How is the food situation in USA, and how much % do you have to tip when you eat out? I'm actually planning to go to Seattle sometime in Sept with a family of three and I'm wondering what the damage will be if we all ate out.

        • Food is good but expensive, I tip as little as possible.

        • Recommend the "Pink Door" 1919 Post Alley, its a little bit expensive but worth at least one visit. There are other interesting restaurants along/near Post Alley and of course the Market Place area.

    • also. Australia is way more clean than USA. I guess there will be dirty and clean suburbs because of different ethnic groups. but from my visit to NY, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco and my experience living in Sydney, Melbourne, NQ, my anecdotal experience is that Australia is so much more cleaner.

      Queens in NY is abysmal

You gotta buy an American Flag like Bandith Keith and wrap it around your head as a bandana. Like a true American… In America!

I was in the US in 2017, 2018 and last year. I can confirm prices have risen considerably. When I first went to the US clothes, and eating out was very reasonable. Brand name clothes were 30% cheaper than in Australia.
Last year I was blown away how expensive everything had become. Brand name clothes weren’t any cheaper than Australia. The range however is far greater so while you might not get a bargain you will be able to pick plenty of unique items.
Plenty of people on here saying the food isn’t good.
I lived there for three months and ate very well. Like here you just have to be willing to pay more. I never ate a bad meal in a restaurant the whole time I was there - take away is very hit and miss.
My suggestion is just enjoy the experience of being there whether it is paying for attractions or just literally hanging out.

    • Cost of living in the US is way more expensive than Australia. I’m glad I came prepared.

  • Ryobi one tool skins

This SDS drill at Walmart is less than $125 Aud and is currently $229 at Bunnings

As others have mentioned, the exchange rate is so bad at the moment that most consumer goods are not really worth buying there. But as a frequent traveller to the US (my wife is from there) I can recommend the following foods and drinks that you can't easily get here:

    • Dill pickle flavoured potato chips
    • Deep dish pizza (specifically in Chicago)
    • Mexican food… yes you can get it here but it's much better there
    • Bourbon and/or tequila… again you can get it here but it's waaaaay cheaper there, I'd even bring some back instead of wasting money on airport duty free on your way back in
  • Chilli fries with melted chess on top

    • With a side serve of pawns?

  • No need to buy anything but thank them for their service.

Levis Jeans used to cost almost nothing in USA a few years ago.

Otherwise just enjoy the holiday and spend money on experiences.

    • 100% correct, it is too expensive to buy anything here in America.
