Cost a fortune to run. If keeping for more than a year or so, will be cheaper to get a split system

    • +3

Yep, these things sound great at "100%" efficient until you realise a split system is 3-600% efficient.

      • +2

Running one of these for a whole night was roughly the same cost as running out split system for almost a fortnight.

        600%??????

ya canna change the laws of physics jim.

Go have a read up on Coefficient of Performance with the refrigeration cycle. A Split system A/C does not generate heat like a resistive element plug in heater, but moves heat from outside to inside.

To that end, 1 unit of electricity can produce 5-6 units of heat - ie 600% efficient.

All plug in heaters will only ever be 100% efficient - ie 1 unit of electricity converts to 1 unit of heat.

Therefore some split systems can use only 20% of the electricity of a plug in heater for the same amount of heat output.

This is why they are also becoming a very popular heating option instead of gas, due to their efficiency. Gas has efficiency loss too - let's say 15% heat lost up the flue.

@placard: Europeans are now trying to convert all their residential heating to use tech equivalent heat pump systems though with the heat waves occurring they might be better off just switching to reverse cycle air conditioning.

            • +2

@boretentsu: Yeah reverse cycle and heated blanket the way to go here for heating. I just replaced my dilapidated solar hot water system with a heat pump. Saving me about $20 a week to run in winter over electric booster off peak.

        • Yeah, the fact that so few people seem to know this blows my mind. People like you are just pissing away their money because of ignorance.

          https://www.agl.com.au/discover/sustainability/heat-pumps-wh….

Because they use electricity to move hot or cold air from one place to another rather than to generate it, heat pumps can deliver up to 10-15 times as much energy as they use. In fact, premium heat pumps can heat a room at 600% efficiency, while gas heaters are around 50% to 95%.

    • what is split systems?

      • +4

Reverse cycle air conditioning I believe.

      • +1

Reverse cycle split system unit - where there's an indoor unit and outdoor separate unit. These are much more efficient and quieter than the old box A/C units.

the energy rating label should be mandated on these heaters so ppl are aware what they are buying into ….

  • Showing $26.95 delivery fee for me

  • Umm..my comments is folded. I'm just assuming this heater is from the same manufacturer as DeLonghi which just costed @$19.99 2 years ago.

  • Bought the same ones from Big W - returned 2 of them

They have a high pitched ringing when both switches are on - can even hear them through my earphones. It was giving me a headache!!
